Pharrell recently appeared for an interview with GQ, which was published on Wednesday, November 13, 2024. During the interview, he spoke about the time he auctioned his old jewelry in 2022, a bunch of which was bought by the rapper Drake. The rapper said:
“You never realize how much all the stuff you have weighs on you, but it does. You don’t know it until you get rid of it. When you let that go, man, you feel so free.”
The Louis Vuitton menswear designer was then asked what he thought about Drake buying those pieces, and then allegedly melting them. To this, the rapper responded:
“Whatever happens to them happens to them. No, because I think beyond all of the ongoings, at the heart of all of it, he’s a fan of music. He’s a fan of the history of what it is, and I happen to be a part of that, and those artefacts are a part of it."
He said that he was absolutely “cool” with Drake melting down his chains. Pharrell said:
"I guess some things are not for me to understand. When you let things go, a huge part of it is actually letting go. Not just of the physical item, but letting go of your connection to what it’s supposed to mean, or the memory. You’re literally letting them go. That was the purpose."
Furthermore, he also claimed that usually when people sell something, they ask the buyer to take care of it as they say “This is my baby.” However, the rapper claimed that the gold he sold was not his baby, and that’s why he let it go.
For the unversed, Pharrell Williams launched his own online auction, JOOPITER, through which he sold 52 of his old items, including jewelry, clothes, and many other collectibles. As per Robb Report, the auction closed in November 2022, and through it, Pharrell earned a sum of $5.2 million.
Drake even mentioned melting down the chains he bought from Pharrell in a collaborative track with Travis Scott
As per Hip Hop DX, Drake bought jewelry worth $3.3 million, which included the N.E.R.D. pendant chain, a brain pendant chain, and even a skateboard pendant chain. Furthermore, he was also seen wearing a few of these items in his 2023 track, Jumbotron Sh*t Poppin’ music video.
Drake even mentioned melting down the gold he bought from Pharrell in his 2023 collaborative track with Travis Scott, called Meltdown. Taking a dig at Pusha T., Drake rapped in the song:
“I melt down the chains that I bought from yo boss. Give a f*ck about all of that heritage sh*t. Since V not around, the members hung up the Louis. They not even wearing that sh*t. You lucky that ‘Vogue’ was suing, ‘Cause I would’ve been with the Wassas in Paris and sh*t.”
Apart from Drake, another celebrity to buy from Pharrell’s auction was Kid Cudi, who purchased a pendant chain. Kim Kardashian also bought a gold watch, and as per the New York Times, the watch cost $73,750. Moreover, Frank Ocean also purchased Piguet Royal Oak from the musician, which was sold for $218,750.
While Pharrell opened up about the auction and Drake buying his gold, and later melting it, the One Dance singer has not yet reacted to Pharrell's comments.
