Fat Joe, the Terror Squad rapper from the Bronx, was honored with the key to New York City. Mayor Eric Adams presented the "New York City Entertainer's Key" to him during a special free concert at Orchard Beach on August 20, 2024, as part of the Rise Up NYC event.
Fat Joe, whose real name is Joseph Cartagena, headlined the concert, which played host to his performance of several hits such as Lean Back and My Lifestyle. He also delivered an acceptance speech after receiving the award, thanking all his supporters and all those who inspired him.
Fat Joe touches on Bronx roots during the ceremony
Mayor Adams, known for his engagement with local communities, took to X on August 21, 2024, to reflect on the moment:
“You know I had to Boogie Down to the Bronx to join the crowd at our Rise Up NYC concert at Orchard Beach! We made it an even more special evening by presenting Fat Joe with the ‘New York City Entertainer’s Key’ for always giving back to the borough that raised him.”
Fat Joe delivered an acceptance speech, wherein he expressed his gratitude. He thanked his family, friends, and the pioneers of hip-hop who influenced his career. He named Melle Mel, Mr. Ness, and KRS-One in his speech, stating that he wouldn't be here if it weren't for KRS-One.
Fat Joe also acknowledged the Bronx community. He also expressed mild surprise at the honor of receiving the "New York City Entertainer's Key," but said that he deserves it, anyway. He then spoke about his journey, from being harassed by the police to seeing his brother become the police commissioner of New York City.
Several prominent figures were attending the event, including rapper N.O.R.E. He congratulated the Bronx native via Instagram:
“Flew in and out to make sure I witness my brother get the key to NEW YORK CITY. THANK YOU @fatjoe and happy birthday keep winning!!!”
The recognition comes months after the mayor had revoked a similar honor from Diddy in June. Diddy was asked to return the key following an incident where a video with Cassie went viral. Adams then revealed his support for survivors of domestic abuse prompted his actions.
