Well-known rapper Swae Lee posted several tweets on July 28, 2024, urging people to think before voting for Kamala Harris, leading to different reactions from the public. The singer, who hails from Inglewood, California, is known for his songs such as Be Like That, Sunflower, and Close to Me.
Lee's first tweet stated:
"Do not vote for Kamala!!! Do your research on that whole camp."
He followed up with another tweet that read:
"I pay over millions in tax dollars every year this man Sent it to A whole nother country!!!!!!!! Those lil dollars that come off your checks they gave it away!!!!!!! Think about that sh*t."
In a third tweet, Swae Lee claimed that each American citizen should have received around "200 grand" based on what they have sent so far. He said that this is a reason people should stop taking a stand for Kamala Harris and added:
"My black people she don't do nothing but sign off on things against yall …(us) voting just cuz you think she's black is not going to end in your favor."
The posts received a mixed reaction from the public, and some agreed with what Swae Lee wrote. One user stated that he would be called "retarded" for saying something true. However, another user refused to believe Swae, calling him "stupid" and writing that the total amount of US foreign aid in 2022 to every country was around $70 billion. The comment also reads:
"That's about $200 per person. For comparison, your mansion is worth 22,000 times more than that."
Swae Lee gained recognition for his association with Rae Sremmurd: Successful projects and other details explained
Also known as Khalif Malik lbn Shaman Brown, his songs have consistently received positive feedback from fans, leading to a huge fanbase. His career began around 10 years ago when he was a part of the hip-hop duo Rae Sremmurd with his brother, Slim Jxmmi.
According to Fader magazine, Swae Lee's mother was in the army, and the family had to keep on moving between different places. At one point, they lived in Texas in a duplex with a backyard, an experience Lee reflected on in a 2016 interview with Fader:
"I thought it was big. But I might've just been fascinated because it was a house."
The family later shifted to Tupelo, Mississippi. They even had a stepfather by then who was familiar with the entire area and sold drugs to support the family. However, the brothers eventually developed an interest in rapping when they joined high school.
Swae and Slim began by releasing music videos on YouTube and formed a duo called Dem Outta St8 Boyz. Despite their mother and stepfather separating at one point, it did not leave any bad impact on their musical career, as they continued releasing a lot of songs like Party Animal. Lee stated in his interview with Fader:
"Me and Jxmmi, we were always just me and Jxmmi. That's all we had. We had jobs, but we liked to spread out music. We were always out late. I guess it was just too rowdy."
The duo became popular from their performances in local shows and changed their name to Rae Sremmurd. They have released four albums, starting with SremmLife in 2015, which reached the fifth spot on the US Billboard 200.
Swae Lee slowly started to work on his solo career, releasing songs like Hurt to Look and Guatemala. He even made guest appearances on the songs of other artists such as Bobo Swae, 2 Chainz, Future, and Post Malone.
