Beabadoobee (aka Beatrice Kristi Ilejay Laus) recently opened up about her Filipino roots and people's obsession with the "whiteness" of their skin in a candid interview with Nylon magazine published on July 17, 2024. The 24-year-old singer discussed her life and encounters with fame and divulged details about her upcoming album, This Is How Tomorrow Moves, in the interview with Nylon magazine's Iana Murray.

Beabadoobee is an English-Filipino singer who released her debut album, Fake It Flowers, in October 2020. The album received much critical acclaim and was ranked within the top 50 albums of 2020 in publications, like Rolling Stone, Consequence of Sound, and others. Her second album, Beatopia, came out in 2022.

Furthermore, Beabadobee has also played the accompanying role of many juggernauts of the industry like The 1975, Clairo, etc.

In her interview with Nylon magazine, Beabadoobee talked about her slow and steady encounters with fame, her desire to play in her hometown, and the closeness of her new album to her real-life incidents.

The Filipino singer revealed that one of her biggest desires was to play at Iloilo City in the Phillippines. Although she's not had the chance to sing in that city, she's performed at an event in Boracay. The 24-year-old revealed that people in the Philippines celebrated their 'proximity to whiteness.'

Beabadobee had moved to London as a three-year-old kid and revealed that she grew up to love her roots as a Filipino, despite people incessantly brainwashing her to be as non-Filipino as possible during her childhood days. She confided she would put eyelid tape on her eyelids to get rid of her monolids and also that one of her friends was gifted so-called whitening soap to reduce their tanned complexion.

"All I want to do is look Filipino. There was a point where I didn’t want to look Filipino at all,” expressed Beabadoobee.

Earlier in the interview, Beabadoobee revealed details surrounding the writing of her new album, This Is How Tomorrow Moves. The album was scheduled to be released on August 16, but the singer recently moved the release date by one week to August 9. The announcement came via an Instagram post on July 17, 2024.

The singer explained the album will be about introspection, learning things about people, and taking accountability for unfavorable situations instead of playing the blame game. Beabadoobee alluded to several "pinnacle moments" taking place that changed her perception of life and human relationships.

"I grew up really quickly. I fell out of love, had a really crazy breakup, then fell back in love. I went on loads of f--king tours and was hardly home. I was by myself quite a lot at times, but I’m grateful that all of those things happened to me because I got to write an album about it."

She continued,

“In my past records, I was constantly blaming other people, but this time I felt like I finally understood why people acted the way they did at times.”

In early 2023, Beabadoobee was the opening act of Taylor Swift's Eras Tour. The 24-year-old described the experience as mind-numbing and said that she was grateful for the opportunity.

Beabadoobee further explained that the unfathomable crowd felt like miniature 2D creatures when she started performing on stage. For the singer, they are all an aggregate of intangible, faceless beings cheering along with her songs. Although she was assured that the nervousness would disappear as soon as she would start her performance, Beabadoobee explained that it never happened.

“Someone told me by the second show — even by the second song — it’s gonna feel super normal. By the end of the tour, I was wanting to sh-t myself every time I went on stage, and I’m like, ‘Nothing has changed"

Taylor Swift's Eras Tour is the highest-grossing concert tour in the music industry's history. The tour crossed the $1 billion threshold by the end of the year and elevated Taylor Swift to billionaire status.
