Former Roc-A-Fella founder Dame Dash recently claimed Jay-Z ruined Beanie Sigel's career. During his appearance on the YouTube channel The Art of Dialogue on Sunday, December 22, 2024, the former record executive called out Hov for how he treated the former Roc-A-Fella artist.

"When Beans (a.k.a. Sigel) chose to go with Jay. That one hurt... 'Cause I'd done a lot. I chose State Property over Rocawear and I just wanted to roll out with State Property. It was almost like he tricked Beans to shelf him and he f*cked his life," Dame Dash said.

Beanie Sigel, a rapper from Philadelphia, who was a flagship artist, signed to Jay-Z and Dame Dash's (and Kareem Burke's) Roc-A-Fella Records in 1998. When Dash and Burke separated from the label, the rapper chose to side with Hov. In the interview, Dash is referencing Sigel's clothing line, State Property (named after his hip-hop group), which was a subsidiary of Rocawear (Dash and Hov's clothing brand).

Dash claimed that Jay-Z "tricked" Sigel, who otherwise would have had a very promising career in the industry. He claimed Beans was going to be his "new Jay," and State Property (band) was going to be "like N.W.A" (a hip-hop group from Compton). When questioned if Dash thought Beanie's career would have been bigger if he chose Dash, the former record executive remarked:

"The sh*t I had planned for him, he f*cked his own self up for that one. Like I had the movies, I had the clothing line."

Dash claimed he also wanted to make Beanie Sigel the vice president at the label along with fellow rapper Cam'ron.

Beanie Sigel (real name Dwight Equan Grant) was born in South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in March 1974. According to his profile on All Music, Sigel began his career as an underground artist and later made appearances on DJ Clue and Jay-Z's projects. He turned into a flagship artist of Roc-A-Fella Records after signing a solo contract with the label in 1998.

With the label, the rapper released his debut album, The Truth (2000), which was a critical and commercial success. It peaked at number five on the Billboard 200. Sigel's other projects with the company include The Reason (2001) and The B. Coming (2005). Both debuted in the top five on the Billboard 200.

Dame Dash Music Group and Def Jam released Sigel's The B. Comin' after Dame Dash left Roc-A-Fella Records. Jay-Z became the president of Roc-A-Fella's parent company, Def Jam, causing a rift between Hov and Dash.

Since 2003, Beanie Sigel has been surrounded by a slew of legal troubles. Per Celebrity Net Worth, this includes allegedly punching a 53-year-old man in the eye socket (2002), being charged with attempted murder after firing shots at a club door (2003), receiving a one-year prison sentence over a federal weapon charge (2005), and drug possession (2009), among others.

When Dame Dash left Roc-A-Fella Records, Sigel was incarcerated. According to a September 2003 article by MTV Stories, the rapper told the publication that he didn't want to get in between the two (after his release, he initially sided with Dash).

Beanie Sigel eventually re-signed with Roc-A-Fella Records, releasing his fourth studio album, The Solution (2007). Beanie Sigel dropped his fifth project, The Broad Street Bully, independently in 2009 after the previous contract expired. He later signed to 50 Cent's G-Unit Records.

Some of Sigel's best songs include Roc the Mic, Ready for War, Feel It In The Air, The ROC (Just Fire), and Beanie (Mack Bitch). He has also starred in documentaries and movies like Backstage (2009), State Property (2002), and Paper Soldiers (2002).

In 2009, the rapper dissed his former mentor Jay-Z on his 2009 collaborative track with Fif, I Go Off. However, the pair made up when they reunited at a concert in 2015.

In 2002, Beanie Sigel formed his hip-hop group, State Property, with Philadelphian Roc-A-Fella labelmates. Members included Sigel Freeway, Peedi Crakk, Oschino Vasquez, Omillio Sparks, and the duo Young Gunz.

Neither Jay-Z nor Beanie Sigel has publicly reacted to Dame Dash's comments.
