On Wednesday, October 23, Clairo took to social media to announce that she was canceling her three planned Toronto shows due to exhaustion. Meanwhile, fans took to the internet to discuss her family life, with many learning that the singer is a “nepo baby.” The conversation occurred online as many have speculated that she has been an “industry plant” since her debut.

For those uninitiated, “nepo baby” is the moniker given to a person whose fame and success is believed to be due to their powerful family ties rather than their own talent. The kids of entertainment industry legends are often called “nepo babies.”

As per Distractify, one TikTok user, TristianPrince, took to the social networking site this week and went viral after seemingly confirming that Clairo is a “nepo baby.” They said online:

“You are telling me I find out Clairo is a nepo baby and I find out on TikTok? Nothing wrong, but she didn’t give off any industry plant vibes. Does nepo baby mean that she was loved, cared for, did art projects in the kitchen, played with friends who live down the street, encouraged to do more art, be yourself, and have a pretty normal life?”

Clairo’s father, Geoff Cottrill, is a corporate executive, while her mother, Allie Cottrill, is a children’s fashion photographer.

More about Clairo’s parents as “nepo baby” goes viral online

Clairo, whose real name is Claire Elizabeth Cottrill, was born to Geoff and Allie on August 18, 1998. Geoff is best known for being a master marketer who has held executive positions in major corporations like Proctor & Gamble, Starbucks, Coca-Cola, and Converse. He is currently the Chief Marketing Officer of Topgolf.

Allie Cottrill works as a children’s fashion photographer.

Geoff reportedly played a critical role in launching his daughter’s music career. As per The New York Times, he consulted his friend Jon Cohen, who then worked as the executive for Cornerstone, a marketing agency that also runs The Fader magazine. Jon managed to sign Claire to the magazine’s Fader Label, through which she released her first 12 tracks.

Through the music label, Claire was introduced to Pat Corcoran, who famously helped Chance the Rapper become an industry legend. Later, the American singer signed with Corcoran's firm, Height Brand, in 2017.

According to Intersect Magazine, many called Claire an “industry plant.” The phrase refers to those who attain success with the help of a gigantic record label or wealthy figure backing them and ensuring their success by providing surplus resources.

Despite her name being attached to seemingly negative phrases like “industry plant” and “nepo baby,” the musician managed to garner a massive following online with her albums like Immunity and Sling, both earning top spots on the Hot 100 chart.

Meanwhile, the singer took to X to announce that her shows in Massey Hall, Toronto, on October 23, 24, and 25 were being postponed as she was battling “extreme exhaustion” and was advised “to go home.”

The Charm singer kicked off her tour on September 6 in Los Angeles and has since performed in multiple cities, including New York, Dallas, Houston, San Diego, and Portland.
