Hannah Pearl Davis, better known online as Pearl, recently generated controversy after listing singer Sabrina Carpenter as one of the many contenders for "Catfish of the Year." Pearl is a YouTuber and cultural commentator known for her antifeminist and conservative rhetoric online, which earned her the nickname "female Andrew Tate."
On December 30, 2024, Pearl posted her list for "Catfish of the Year" on her X page. She thanked "filters, plastic surgeons, and the FaceTime app" for making the list possible while naming Sabrina Carpenter, Sydney Sweeney, and many other women the winners.
Pearl deemed that while Sabrina Carpenter was "a phenomenal singer and pop sensation," she was "mid" underneath all the makeup. The post had two pictures of Sabrina Carpenter side by side, one of the singer glammed up at a red carpet event and the other of when she was younger, wearing less makeup.
"Next up to bat we have @SabrinaAnnLynn !!! A phenomenal singer and pop sensation but under all the makeup she too is a mid. Please like and RT if you vote for her!!" the tweet about Sabrina Carpenter read.
The post, which earned immense backlash, received 679K views at the time of this article.
Pearl's critique of Sydney Sweeney claimed the actress looked like "another college girl at University of Arizona" without her professional makeup. She attached several pics of Sweeney in a bathing suit that recently went viral on social media as the reference for her claim.
Exploring Pearl's rise to fame amid Sabrina Carpenter controversy
According to The New York Post, Pearl was born to software entrepreneur parents in Chicago. Her mother was a former director on the board for UN Women USA.
As per her LinkedIn profile, Pearl graduated from Elmhurst University with a degree in economics. She cited Ben Shapiro and economist Thomas Sowell as people who influenced her in college. Pearl currently lives in London.
While Pearl started her YouTube page in 2020, she gained popularity in 2022 following Andrew Tate's arrest for alleged s*x trafficking in Romania. People flocked to Pearl's YouTube channel following the arrest, as Tate had appeared on her page as a guest just days before he was apprehended.
Pearl's YouTube channel has over 1.98 million subscribers and her X page has 462K followers at the time of this article. Her political views earned her the nickname "Female Andrew Tate" after she argued that women should not have the right to vote in one of her popular videos.
In a video uploaded to X in June 2023, Pearl said that "all of society is basically pandering and simping for women," which she claimed was one of the crucial reasons for its downfall.
“The issue is that the politicians, the only way they can get elected, the women vote for them. The reason we can’t see a change in these laws … is because they won’t be re-elected. Does every person deserve the right to vote? Because essentially we have a society where men are just paying for women’s bad decisions,” she added.
In another video posted around the same time, she claimed that society would be fine without women outside of reproduction. She claimed that if women stopped working, there would be an increase in overall efficiency.
In other videos, she claimed people shouldn't be allowed to divorce, said that women were the reason men cheated and that men deserved to physically abuse their wives.
Her commentary resulted in her getting banned on TikTok in August 2022. Despite her antifeminist views, Pearl said she was not a misogynist during a 2023 interview with Insider.
“Misogyny is the hatred of women. I don’t hate women. For some reason acknowledging a basic truth like men and women are different is labelled as misogyny nowadays,” she added.
