Getting to know Joe Jackson:
Joe Jackson was born on July 26, 1928, to Crystal Lee and Samuel Jackson. He was the eldest child of his parents and had four siblings — two sisters, Verna Mae and Lula Mae, and two brothers, Lawrence and Luther. According to his memoir, The Jacksons, his father was a school teacher and he was a few of the African Americans who owned a car at that time, due to which his father got the nickname "Professor Jackson."
Joe's early childhood was spent in Arkansas until his parents separated and he moved to Oakland, California, at the age of 12. As a teenager, he attempted to pursue a professional boxing career, though he did not achieve success in the sport. During this time, he also worked at East Chicago's Inland Steel Company, where he became an overhead crane operator.
While working as an overhead crane operator, Joe Jackson attempted to begin his career in music with his brother Luther with a band called Ford Falcons in the 1950s. However, the band did not achieve success, therefore, he continued his work at the Steel Company.
During his time in Chicago, Joe Jackson met Katherine Scruse, and the couple married on November 5, 1949, eventually settling in Gary, Indiana. Together, they welcomed 10 children — Maureen "Rebbie" Jackson, Sigmund "Jackie" Jackson, Toriano "Tito" Jackson, Jermaine Jackson, LaToya Jackson, Marlon Jackson, Brandon Jackson (Marlon's twin, who passed away shortly after birth), Michael Jackson, Steven "Randy" Jackson, and Janet Jackson.
As Joe Jackson's musical endeavors did not achieve success, he turned his focus to his children. According to the Encyclopedia of Arkansas, he recognized the potential talent in his older children and began training Jackie, Tito, and Jermaine in music during the mid-1960s. Tito Jackson learned how to play instruments while others sang.
The Jackie, Tito and Jermaine trio were later joined by younger brothers Marlon and Michael, forming the famous The Jackson 5. The group garnered significant local attention and, with the support of Motown Records, achieved international recognition. They became the first group whose first four singles reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1970.
Joe also nurtured the solo careers of his children including Jermaine and Michael, who gained the title of King of Pop and worldwide recognition with a successful solo career in the 1980s and 1990s.
In July 2015, Joe Jackson survived a stroke while he was visiting Brazil. Since the stroke, he was in poor health condition, as per the reports. In addition, the days before his demise, Joe posted a cryptic message on (then Twitter) now X, which was later clarified by his nephew that his grandfather could not have written it —
"I have seen more sunsets than I have left to see. The sun rises when the time comes and whether you like it or not the sun sets when the time comes," Joe wrote on X.
The Jackson family informed Entertainment Tonight at that time that Joe Jackson had been hospitalized for an extended period while battling pancreatic cancer. According to the National Cancer Institute, pancreatic cancer affects the pancreas and leads to the formation of malignant tissues. The family reported that doctors had advised them that Joe had limited time remaining, as the cancer was deemed untreatable.
Joe Jackson passed away at 89.
