Drag queen Plane Jane was heavily discussed on X following her appearance at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards. The RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant raised eyebrows online after allegedly mocking Chappell Roan at the event. It is worth noting that the former went on to clarify in an interview that she wished to “redeem” herself in the eyes of Roan’s fans.
X user @dragraceher took to the platform on September 12, 2024, to share a video of Plane Jane posing for the paparazzi alongside her peers. She was seen wearing a pink cowboy hat, a corset, and a full face of white-base makeup, similar to Roan’s signature style as seen in her trending Pink Pony Club music video.
Plane Jane was seemingly acting like she was shy of the camera. The tweet also read:
“Plane Jane at the VMAs dressed up as Chappell Roan acting like she’s scared of the cameras this b**ch is playing with FIRE tonight- I’m f**king SCREAMING.”
For the uninitiated, Plane Jane is a drag performer best known for her appearance in the 16th season of RuPaul’s Drag Race. She was also a constant in the Boston Drag Gauntlet Cycle 2, where she bagged third place and also appeared in All Stars.
At the time of writing this article, the aforementioned tweet had amassed over three million views, with many expressing shock over the same and discussing the supposed drama between the two celebrities. Some comments online read:
What happened between Chappell Roan and Plane Jane?
In the Meet the Queens segment of RuPaul’s Drag Race, Plane Jane revealed that she was a lover of airplanes and that she always related to the character Jane from Tarzan, which led to her drag name coming into being. She explained:
“I’m also into very musky, stinky, jungle men, so I just put the two together and my name just came about."
Plane Jane is an active performer in Boston and has become a celebrated figure in media. Recently, she also made an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! She had amassed over 333,000 followers on Instagram at the time of writing this article.
In June, she garnered immense flack from Chappell Roan’s fans after she questioned the latter’s drag authenticity.
In a now-deleted tweet, Jane said that the My Kink Is Karma's “love for drag feels performative as f**k.” She also added:
“No shade queen secure the bag. I’m all for artists platforming and celebrating drag! Just a skeptic being skeptical.”
Chappell Roan had not publicly responded to the tweet at the time of writing this article.
Plane Jane reveals at the MTV VMAs that she is seeking redemption from Chappel Roan’s fans
In an interview with 'Out' at the MTV VMAs, Jane revealed that she wanted to “redeem” herself “in the eyes of Chappell stans and show that I am one of them.” She added that she injects “Chappell Roan straight into my veins.”
The Drag Race season finalist added:
“And I just wanted to pay homage to this classic Chappell Roan look. The song ‘Pink Pony Club’ it’s really about the queer community. It’s about drag. And it’s a love letter to drag. So, I’m just here repping the queen... and, of course, giving it my little big b*oby twist.”
Meanwhile, Chappell Roan was introduced on the 2024 MTV VMAs stage by Drag Race season 15 winner Sasha Colby, who has always been an ardent supporter of Roan.
Roan went on to win the Best New Artist award at the function before jetting off to London to launch the European leg of her tour.
