Aaliyah's brother, Rashad Haughton, has recently revealed where he thinks the American songstress' career would have been if she were alive. His sister died in the Marsh Harbour Cessna 402 crash on August 25, 2001, along with eight other people when an overloaded aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff.

Rashad Haughton is an American writer, screenwriter, film director, and Aaliyah's older brother. The 47-year-old is also the nephew of Blackground Records founder Barry Hankerson. Rashad Haughton has been featured in several music videos of Aaliyah, including Age Ain't Nothing but a Number, 4 Page Letter, If Your Girl Only Knew, and Hot Like Fire.

Haughton has also directed and written The Mim Rose in 2000, starring his younger sister. He also wrote and directed short films like Chrysalis (2006), Love Like Aliens (2011), and Muga Shozoku (2015). He appeared in the 2004 film Proud, playing the role of Hank Fields.

In an exclusive interview with People published on January 16, 2025, Rashad Haughton reflected on his late sister's contributions to music, often dubbed the Princess of R&B. Rashad claimed that he often talks to the songstress in his mind when he is in trouble or misses her.

During the conversation, Haughton asserted that the Try Again songstress would have been "the biggest star in the world" if she were alive today. The 47-year-old also reflected on his sister's nature, highlighting her charm as a caring and loving person.

"My sister, although she worked so hard, she always was loving and caring to the people around her. Her makeup artists, the managers. A lot of times, because we go through so much in this world… a lot of people are suffering, the main thing is you have to smile through the pain, smile through the challenges and hug people. I think when people talk about my sister, the number one thing was that she was such a loving and caring person."

He added:

"Her legacy continues on. So we can imagine, we can dream, but we still have all those incredible works that she did do."

On her birthday, i.e., January 16, Mattel announced that Aaliyah would get her custom doll made as part of the Barbie Music Series. Rashad Haughton reportedly helped curate the doll's outfit, which is inspired by the outfit the Princess of R&B wore in her One in a Million music video that was released in 1996. The music video features the songstress in a black faux leather top, matching pants, and vests. In it, Aaliyah flaunts her iconic shades and hairstyle.

Speaking about the collaboration, Haughton opined that her sister would be overjoyed to find out that a Barbie doll was made honoring her legacy.

"I can see her playing with these dolls wherever she is right now, which I know is heaven and in a beautiful place. And she's going to have a doll with her, and be doing all the dance moves from 'One in a Million' with it," he said.

The Barbie doll's pre-sale units have already sold out, but new units will be restocked at Target on January 26. Fans in Britain can also buy the Aaliyah-inspired Barbie doll from Amazon.
