Following Judge Ural Glanville’s recusal from Young Thug’s RICO trial on Monday, Shakura Ingram has been appointed the new presiding judge. Glanville’s judgments came under scrutiny after he met the defense attorneys, leading Thug’s lawyer, Brian Steele, to file a motion to have Glanville removed from the case.
The new judge, Shakura Lageane Ingram, serves in the 5th Superior Court District of Georgia. She took her position at the office in August 2018, and her current term will end on December 31, 2024. However, Shakura won the re-election in May of this year. She previously served as a magistrate court judge in Fulton County from 2015 to 2018.
Shakura received her Bachelor’s degree from Clark Atlanta University and a Juris Doctor from Georgia State University College of Law. She also worked as a senior associate at Thomas Kennedy Sampson & Tompkins LLP and as a senior Assistant District Attorney for the Fulton County District Attorney's Office.
The new Judge for Young Thug’s YSL RICO case was also an Assistant Solicitor at the City Court of Atlanta. Following her assignment to the case, Young Thug's fans expressed their thoughts:
"Just in the middle of looking at her career now. I'm glad they reassigned a judge quickly. Any word on when they are back in court yet? I know it may take a while if she has to catch up on the case etc", wrote one person.
"Let’s hope she brings more integrity", wished another.
"hope this new judge ismore transparent and fair than Granville", one more individual chimed in.
While some fans hoped Judge Shakura might be able to bring justice for the Atlanta rapper's case, a few others shared their inkling that things might get worse as she takes over.
"The defense is like a dog chasing a car. New judge, now what...Now they'll have to try the case instead of grandstanding", one person expressed.
"I don’t trust her neither", another commented.
"From bad to worse", noted one more.
"I have doubts that another Fulton county superior court will be any better at this point. We will see", wrote one person.
Judge Rachel Krause argued why Glanville's recusal from Young Thug's case was necessary
The motion filed by Brian Steele seeking Judge Ural Glanville be taken off Jeffery Lamar Williams, aka Young Thug's trial, stated:
"Judge Glanville, lawyer Love, and lawyer Hylton have prejudiced and tainted Mr. Williams’ trial so deeply as Judge Glanville has not acted as a Judge but morphed into an essential part of the prosecution team."
The filing added that Glanville secretly met with Lil Woody. Fulton County Superior Court judge Rachel Krause, who oversaw Glanville's removal, noted that the move was pertinent to restoring public faith in the judicial system. Krause said on Monday:
"This court has no doubt that Judge Glanville can and would continue presiding fairly over this matter if the recusal motions were denied, but the 'necessity of preserving the public's confidence in the judicial system' weighs in favor of excusing Judge Glanville from further handling of this case."
Chuck Boring, the former Judicial Qualifications Commission Director, said it is up to Judge Shakura Ingram to decide if Young Thug's trial will continue from where Ural Glanville left off.
