The Los Angeles District Attorney's office has explained in an Insta post on May 17 why it would not pursue legal action against Sean "Diddy" Combes in the wake of a viral video that surfaced online. The clip featured him viciously assaulting Cassie Ventura, his ex-girlfriend.
The incident reportedly took place in the InterContinental Hotel in Century City, Los Angeles on March 5, 2016.
Now, once the clip became viral, the LA County Attorney's Office responded to it. They shared that while the incident was "extremely disturbing and difficult to watch," they won't be able to press charges on the rapper. The office stated that the prosecution window had closed because the claimed attack occurred on March 5, 2016.
Nevertheless, once the Insta post of LA County went viral, and was re-uploaded by theneighborhoodtalk, netizens took to the platform to react against the decision and criticize the LA county DA’s office.
Los Angeles County District Attorney won't charge Diddy for assaulting Cassie Ventura
The surveillance footage of singer Sean "Diddy" Combs beating his ex-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, was denounced by the LA County District Attorney's Office, but no charges were brought.
In the viral clip, viewers could see Ventura attempting to put on her shoes as she waits for the hotel elevator, barefoot. The rapper then appeared with a towel wrapped around his waist, while she was attempting to gather all of her bags and enter the hotel elevator.
Then, with one hand still keeping his towel closed, Diddy grabbed Ventura by the back of her neck, tossed her to the ground, and started kicking her. After that, he could be seen sitting in a chair, when he removed something from the table, possibly a vase, and threw it in her direction.
CNN confirmed the video using pictures of the hotel hallways, and Ventura's lawyer Douglas Wigdor described it as "gut-wrenching" in a May 18 statement to the same publication.
Now, once the video went viral, the news reached the LA county DA’s office. Addressing the same, they wrote on their official Instagram page:
“We are aware of the video that has been circulating online allegedly depicting Sean Combs assaulting a young woman in Los Angeles. We find the images extremely disturbing and difficult to watch. If the conduct depicted occurred in 2016, unfortunately we would be unable to charge as the conduct would have occurred beyond the timeline where a crime of assault can be prosecuted.”
They further wrote:
“As of today, law enforcement has not presented a case related to the attack depicted in the video against Mr. Combs, but we encourage anyone who has been a victim or witness to a crime to report it to law enforcement or reach out to our office for support from our Bureau of Victims Services.”
Here, it is worth noting that in a May 18 article of the Page Six, it has been stated that the legal experts have said, that in California, the statute of limitations is one year for misdemeanor assault and three years for felonies. The video has outlived those deadlines since Ventura and Combs got into a confrontation eight years ago.
As soon as the Insta post of the DA’s office went viral, people flocked to the platform to comment. Netizens were not happy with the choice made.
Even though Combs has not been charged criminally for abusing Casie, she did sue him in November 2023, for alleged r*pe, physical abuse, and other things.
On the other hand, following the clip, Diddy remained silent about the entire situation.
