Chappell Roan recently spoke about South African country musician, Orville Peck, and how he changed her life for the better. During an interview with Nardwuar the Human Serviette on December 16, 2024, the My Kink Is Karma singer recalled how she first got to know Orville. She mentioned:

“I first heard of him ‘cause my friend said, ‘Look at this guy; he’s so hot.’ And he had his mask on and everything, and I was like, ‘God, who is this?’ “Went to see him, and his show changed my whole life. Changed how I do shows.”

Talking about how the male artist's performance at Troubadour influenced her, Chappell Roan added:

“Because he performed at the Troubadour in West Hollywood, and he had local drag queens open up for him. Meatball was one of them. And I told myself from that show, ‘If I ever perform my own headline shows, I’m gonna have local drag queens open up for me too.’ And then I did. So he changed my life, and now we’re friends.”

Orville Peck, aka Daniel Pitout, is best known for his songs, Big Sky, Smalltown Boy, Born This Way, Mona Lisas and Mad Haters, and many more. Furthermore, the singer is also renowned for his unique masks as he has never shown his face to the masses.

In a previous interview with The Boot on October 10, 2019, Peck gave the reason for the same, stating that wearing a mask helps him remain “anonymous.” He mentioned:

"I think the mask helped with that in a way, but not because the way that people maybe think. I think another misconception is that I can be really candid and open because I'm somehow remaining anonymous, but it's not really like that. If anything, I think that my mask helps eliminate pretense, and this idea of having to go onstage and perform as someone or something I'm not."

“I just woke up one day and it was on my face”—Revisiting Orville Peck's statement about his mask as Chappell Roan appreciates him

Orville Peck gave more than one reason for wearing the mask accessory. Apart from staying anonymous, he spoke to Vogue on June 13, 2019 and reasoned:

"I just woke up one day and it was on my face, and it has always been there.”

Born in Johannesburg, Orville Peck released his first album, Pony in 2019. Later, he dropped Bronco in 2022, and his recent album, Stampede in 2024. Apart from the albums, Peck is also famous for his Extended Plays, like Bronco: Chapters 1 & 2, Stampeded: Volume 1 and Show Pony.

Peck has also released a number of singles, including No Glory in the West, Miss Chatelaine, The Masquerade, Summertime, Midnight Ride, Death Valley High and even Born This Way. For his work in music, the artist has won many awards and nominations, such as the Libera Awards, GLAAD Media Awards, Canadian Country Music Awards and even the Queerty Awards.

As Chappell Roan shared the story of how Orville Peck inspired her, she herself performed with drag artists during her Midwest Princess Tour in October, this year. While Roan’s words about Peck sparked a conversation amongst netizens on social media, Orville had not reacted to Chappell’s interview at the time of publishing this article.
