Drake indulged in an unfollowing binge on social media on October 1. Eagle-eyed fans noticed that the rapper cut social media ties with celebrities like Kendrick Lamar, LeBron James, DeMar DeRozan, Metro Boomin, Joe Budden, and Playboi Carti.
This move didn't come as a surprise to many considering the tension between the Canadian rapper and the other celebrities due to his recent rap battle with Kendrick Lamar. Many of the celebrities he unfollowed took Lamar's side in the beef despite previously maintaining a friendly relationship with Drizzy.
However, some netizens were surprised the rapper was still following Sean 'Diddy" Combs amid his recent legal troubles. Combs was arrested on charges of "s*x trafficking, racketeering, and transportation to engage in prostitution charges" and is currently held at the Metropolitan Detention Center.
Many wondered why the Canadian rapper didn't unfollow Combs during his recent spree.
"WTF I mean maybe he hasn’t gotten to him yet……" one person theorized.
"Everyone but Diddy...?" another person questioned.
Others were shocked that the Canadian rapper still followed Lamar even after their feud.
"He was still following Kendrick this whole time ? Lmao and Joe ???" one person tweeted.
"The fact that he was still following half these people is so funny to me," another person added.
"Why was he following Kendrick in the first place," someone else commented.
Some fans wondered if this meant they could expect new music from the 6 God crooner soon.
"Maybe a new album drop? Or just some personal spring cleaning? Either way, it’s bound to stir up some chatter!" one fan tweeted.
"Warning the opps before he drop music on their head top," someone else added.
Exploring the reasons for Drake unfollowing LeBron James and others
Drake's rap battle with Kendrick Lamar took the music industry by storm. Many celebrities took sides in the battle, with several choosing Lamar. The general public also agreed with this decision, with the rapper crowned the winner after he released his hit track Not Like Us.
While Lamar and Drake's feud was brewing for over a decade, many celebrities who took Lamar's side had previously been friendly with the Canadian rapper. Metro Boomin, whose track Like That instigated the rap battle, had previously worked with Drake on his collaborative album with Future.
But in recent months, their friendship soured, with Metro being an active proponent of the rap battle on social media. The record producer also released a diss beat titled BBL Drizzy online for amateur rappers to use. Interestingly, while Drake unfollowed Metro, he did not unfollow Future, who also collaborated on Like That.
LeBron James and DeMar DeRozan were seen at Kendrick Lamar's pop-out show, where he performed most of his Drake diss tracks live for the first time. The latter also appeared in the video for Not Like Us. The Canadian rapper previously had a good friendship with the two basketball players, and he even has a tattoo of James on his arm.
Joe Budden and Drizzy also have a long-standing feud with each other. In 2016, the two exchanged diss tracks. They also clashed recently after the former slammed Drake's 2023 album For All The Dogs.
The only surprise name on the unfollow list was Payboi Carti as the two rappers did not have a public falling out and even collaborated on the recent track No Face, previewed on social media in August 2024. However, the track was released on streaming services without Carti's feature.
