Lady Gaga explains how the "art of darkness" helped in shaping her character in Joker: Folie a Deux
In the first round of press screenings of Joker: Folie a Deux on September 22, Lady Gaga interacted with fans and answered their questions about the film and her character:
"I would do anything for love, and she [her character in Joker] would too."
The singer also explained that the art of darkness played an important role in shaping her character in the film, and added:
"Darkness healed me even to this day. Not always, but, like, in the moments where I sort of, explore the dark arts of you know, film or fashion or photography, makeup, music.
She continued:
"I always, like, go to another level when it's dark. And that. And I think that creates, like, kind of a war within yourself when you feel that way.
Lady Gaga had previously hinted at her presence in Joker 2's press screenings via cryptic messages on Instagram. Her messages read "I'm ready for my interview" and "Don't tell me what to wear."
In an earlier conversation with Variety, Gagita also appreciated director Todd Phillips' vision for Joker: Folie a Deux. She explained that the film has a dose of everything, including "music, dance, drama, courtroom drama, comedy, happiness, and sadness." She said:
"He took a very big swing with this whole concept and with the script, giving the sequel to Joker this audacity and complexity."
Joker: Folie a Deux is described as a musical romance, and picks up after the ending of its predecessor, Joker (2019). The film is set in Arkham Asylum, where Phoenix's Joker aka Arthur Fleck is held hostage after his role in Gotham City's massacre.
In the asylum, Fleck meets Lady Gaga's Dr Harleen Quinzel, a peculiar fellow psychiatric patient who develops a romantic bond with him. The trailer indicates that the couple eventually escapes from the asylum to wreak havoc on Gotham City once again.
The trailer also features Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix's characters dancing to multiple classical numbers. The film will reportedly feature more of these, such as What the World Needs Now Is Love, That's Life, Get Happy, and For Once in My Life.
Speaking at the CinemaCon, director Todd Phillips explained his reason for choosing Lady Gaga to play Harleen Quinzel and said:
"We cast Gaga because she's magic. I was a producer on A Star Is Born ... That was the first time I really met her and got to watch her work. As we were writing this script, Scott [Silver], who I wrote it with, kept going back to her."
Joker: Folie a Deux is set to premiere worldwide on October 2, 2024.
