Madison Beer voiced her support for fellow singer Chappell Roan amid the latter's controversial TikToks about "creepy behavior" from fans. On August 19, 2024, Roan took to TikTok to criticize fans for stalking her and harassing her family and friends.
Her video gained public outcry, with many calling her ungrateful and unfit for celebrity life. Others claimed this was on par with anyone famous, adding she shouldn't have chosen this profession if she didn't know about the risks.
However, in an interview with NME on September 17, Madison Beer disagreed with that notion, adding that fame should not open the doors for upsetting behavior.
“I don’t think she’s [Roan] ungrateful for her fans. People have said, ‘You signed up for this. You have to deal with it now.’ And I think that’s not true. Just because she makes music and people might like it, it doesn’t mean that she signed up for that,” Beer said.
The 25-year-old singer also said that fans needed to allow their favorite celebrities to be human, adding people took what Roan said out of context.
“How I took it was she was talking about the people who do things that are inherently wrong, like sit outside of her house or follow her home from an event. You can’t do that to people, you have to allow people to be human. And I think we forget that people, like our favourite artists, are human beings at the end of the day,” she said.
Madison Beer also urged people to treat their favorite celebrities with more empathy, commenting on Chappell Roan's overnight stardom, which may have been overwhelming for the singer. This is not the first time Beer has spoken out against fan behavior.
On August 28, Madison Beer took to Instagram stories to explain why she didn't entertain photos in her hotel. She said the hotel became like her "temporary home" when she was touring and that she was "entitled to some private time." This came just days after Chappell Roan posted her TikTok videos.
"We live in a parasocial time" — Madison Beer about creating music in a social media world
In her interview with NME, Madison Beer reflected on the massive change social media brought to the music industry and the way it influenced how people interacted with their favorite artists. Beer, who was only 12 when she first started making music, said:
“When I started making music, I was 12-years-old. There was no such thing as TikTok. There was no real Instagram craziness. Social media was brand-new. We now live in a parasocial time.”
She also said that her longevity in the industry has allowed her to set boundaries and stand up for herself, adding she was now "listening and trusting" herself more. Madison Beer also touched on the constant competitive nature of the industry, saying that her mental health improved after she stopped looking at her peers as competition.
Madison Beer, who recently released 15 Minutes and Make You Mine, commented on enjoying the dance-pop genre of the songs and always wanting to make music with that vibe.
“I think I’ve always enjoyed that vibe, and I’ve always wanted to get into it. I just didn’t know if I could make music like that because it felt like something out of my abilities. But then I was like, ‘Why do I feel that way? We could just try.’ And we leaned into it and we gave it a stab and people really liked it,” Madison Beer said.
During the interview, Madison Beer also praised Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter for their recent success after years in the industry, adding that “pop music is finally cool to listen to again."
When asked where she found herself in this era of pop music, Beer said that she was "pretty happy" with where she is now. However, she said she was unsure if she could deal with massive stardom.
Madison Beer has two studio albums to her credit, Life Support and Silence Between Songs. The singer recently wrapped up her global 'The Spinnin Tour' in Melbourne on September 2, 2024. She performed in several cities across Europe, North America, Australia, Japan, and Indonesia, with her first show in Stockholm, Sweden, on February 24.
