KISS star Paul Stanley has broken his silence on the stage brawl that broke out among the members of the band Jane's Addiction during their September 13 concert in Boston.
The show came to an abrupt halt when frontman Perry Farrell threw a punch at the band's guitarist Dave Navarro during an ongoing show in front of the audience. The fight resulted in the band canceling their remaining tour shows and confirming a hiatus because of Perry Farrell's 'mental health difficulties.'
Speaking on Steve-O's Wild Ride podcast, Paul Stanley condemned the actions of Jane's Addiction members, saying:
“You don’t hit. And you don’t bring your problems onstage. You leave your ego – well, that’s more difficult. But you leave your anger and your resentment at the bottom of the stairs.”
The Rock and Roll All Nite artist explained the situation from the perspective of the audience, saying:
“The audience paid. And that goes back to that same philosophy of [KISS] being the band we never saw."
He continued:
“People get one chance to see you, possibly on a tour. It doesn’t matter about last night or about the night after – that’s their night, and for them to see you not interacting with your bandmate, that’s kid s***. That’s disrespectful to the people who paid.”
Jane's Addiction frontman Perry Ferrell issues apology statement, describing his behavior as 'inexcusable'
Perry Ferrell issued an apology statement after his altercation with Dave Navarro on September 13. The 65-year-old described the weekend as 'incredibly difficult' and apologized to his fans and bandmates, especially Dave Navarro.
"Unfortunately, my breaking point resulted in inexcusable behavior, and I take full accountability for how I chose to handle the situation," he said (via Instagram Story).
Jane's Addiction guitar tech Dan Cleary recently revealed that Perry Ferrell had also punched Dave Navarro in the face backstage after their altercation on stage.
Ferrell's wife Etty Lau issued a statement on Instagram on September 14 where she addressed the entire fiasco.
“Rather than speculating, I thought to post a first person account of what happened on stage,” she began.
Lau explained that there was severe animosity and tension between the band members, which, according to her, was the magic that made the band so dynamic. She attributed her husband's behaviour to 'tinnitus and a sore throat every night,' and explained:
“Perry’s frustration had been mounting, night after night, he felt that the stage volume had been extremely loud and his voice was being drowned out by the band.”
“When the audience in the first row, [they] started complaining up to Perry cussing at him that the band was planning too loud and that they couldn’t hear him, Perry lost it,” she continued.
Thereafter, Lau alleged that Jane's Addiction's bassist Eric Avery went up to Perry and punched him thrice after the show.
“Dave still looked handsome and cool in the middle of a fight. Perry was a crazed beast for the next half an hour – he finally did not calm down, but did breakdown and cried and cried. Eric, well he either didn’t understand what descalation meant or took advantage of the situation and got in a few cheap shots on Perry,” she concluded.
According to video footage made by fans, Farrell seemed to be the one starting the fight. He approached Dave Navarro and shoved him while the latter was playing. Thereafter, the fight was broken up and they were escorted backstage by Avery and other crew members.
