Rapper Killer Mike has recently disclosed the motivation behind his decision to consult a therapist. The Atlanta native revealed in a recent interview with NPR on Wednesday, August 7, that the demands of his career caused personal issues that he could not manage alone.
This interview was a part of Killer Mike's ongoing promotional tour for Songs For Sinners & Saints, his most recent project, and a 10-track album he co-wrote with his band, The Mighty Midnight Revival.
During the interview, the rapper said,
“This is overwhelming: fame and money. And most people get fame without the money, but this sh*t is just overwhelming…”
He continued,
“You need somewhere to make sense of it all. So my wife found a Black woman therapist and she’s absolutely amazing. And I’ve been better for it.”
Talking about the therapist, he further claimed that he does not attend the sessions once a week because, in his opinion, some things must be resolved on one's own. He said that it had been a terrific experience for him to speak with the therapist, who is knowledgeable about unconventional thinking and his mentality.
Rapper Killer Mike talked about his recent album and his motivation behind releasing it
Rapper Killer Mike recently appeared on NPR, just after his seventh studio album, Songs for Sinners & Saints dropped. During the interview, he talked about his deceased mother and grandmother, his struggles, his wife's support, and what inspired him to consult a therapist.
According to NPR, he reportedly grabbed the double-sided pendant hanging from his gold link chain while he spoke about his deceased grandmother. He then said she was the inspiration behind his music's recent spiritualization. He further said that he used to go to two churches with his grandmother and fell in love with the music.
The pendant purportedly included images of his deceased grandmother, who died in 2012, and his mother, who died in 2017, five years after his grandmother. Then the rapper admitted one had taught him the value of God, while the other had helped him find the plug when trapped in a moral dilemma. Talking about the women, he further said,
“They’re like my guardians.”
He continued,
“This is overwhelming: fame and money… I hadn’t grieved my mother. I hadn’t taken a rest from the road in a decade. I held a tremendous amount of guilt from not being able to be a heavier part of my first three children’s lives because I was on the road so much.”
Hip Hop Dx reported in their August 10 article that five days before the album’s August 2 release date, on July 29, the rapper revealed the details of his new album.
According to the same source, Mike stated in a news statement,
“For me, this is a testimonial. When I was growing up, an important part of church service was people having the opportunity to stand up and give public testimony on their trials, tribulations, and triumphs.”
Killer Mike then claimed that following the festive mood that greeted Michael, he was reminded that although hardships never end, God is always by his side. He added it served as a testament to his turbulent past, his struggles, and his ongoing success in the face of uncertainty, blatant hostility, and dread.
Killer Mike's recent album Songs for Sinners & Saints is currently available on Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube.
