Tyrese Gibson took to social media to express his displeasure with President Joe Biden and VP Kamala Harris over the Anti-Asian Hate Crime Bill passed in 2021. The actor and singer made these comments during an Instagram Live session with civil rights attorney Ben Crump on August 29, 2024.
He criticized the Biden-Harris administration for what he saw as hypocrisy in passing a law protecting Asians while overlooking the black and brown communities.
“There is a crime bill that was signed into law that protects Asians at all costs. Where is that same f***ing law to be signed into law when it comes to Black and Brown people? Because what you’re doing is — President Biden and Kamala Harris — what you’re doing is, you’re saying that Black and Brown people will continue to be disposable. That sh*t doesn’t make sense.”
President Joe Biden and VP Kamala Harris passed the Anti-Asian Hate Crime Bill on May 20, 2021, following a stark increase in hate crimes against Asian Americans due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Tyrese explained why the law was signed in the first place, saying that there was a significant spike in hate crimes against Asians after COVID-19, allegedly motivated by Donald Trump, which led to people beating, shooting, and killing Asians in the US.
However, he argued that the White House allegedly overlooked "every Black and Brown Mexican and Latino" individual who has also been the victim of hate crimes and racial profiling when passing the Anti-Asian Hate Crime Bill.
“And then [Biden] gets into the White House and skips over every Black and Brown Mexican and Latino that has been getting killed like flies and he makes it a low: Asian Hate Crime Bill. It’s signed into law," Tyrese said.
Tyrese Gibson voted for Joe Biden in 2020
Amid concerns about President Joe Biden's age for contesting in the upcoming presidential elections, Tyrese Gibson also shared his opinion on the topic via social media. In a Facebook post dated July 21, the day President Joe Biden withdrew from the elections, Gibson wrote that he had decided "to RUN from the president."
"I don’t know what’s going on with President Biden and his health and his age, but I am seeing the same clips and footage that you’re saying as his health and his age is definitely a very big concern of mine…. so I think the most honorable and obvious choice would be to let Kamala Harris step into the role and take charge of the presidency which is what vice president technically is…" Tyrese elaborated.
He added that he had voted for the Biden-Harris administration in 2020, continuing that he was not a fan or supporter of former president and Republican nominee Donald Trump. He remained cryptic about who he would vote for in the upcoming elections, writing that he did not choose to go with the current president, VP, or Donald Trump.
Tyrese Gibson ended his post with a nod to President Lyndon B. Johnson, who signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to prevent racial discrimination in voting.
Kamala Harris and Donald Trump will face each other in the presidential election on November 5, 2024.
