Former rapper and singer ILoveMakonnen recently announced his retirement from the music industry. Meanwhile, podcaster Joe Budden weighed in on the news during the latest episode of The Joe Budden Podcast, which was released on YouTube on Sunday, September 15. Budden commented:
"I don't care I don't really shop at Costco often... you gonna kill sh*t on a Tuesday at Costcos... congratulations to Makonnen hope you got everything you wanted from this game... but you was trash anyway nobody sad..."
Budden alleged he didn't know that ILoveMakonnen was going to retire. The podcaster even questioned whether Makonnen had been active in the music scene before he announced his retirement.
Makonnen reportedly made the announcement on September 5 via an Instagram post, stating:
"I'm retiring ILoveMakonnen. Thank you all for your support and interests over the years. It's time I move on and go live my life. Heavy in the streets in my last song."
For the unversed, Makonnen rose to fame in 2014 with his hit single Tuesday, which brought him widespread recognition.
More about ILoveMakonnen's music journey: Details explored
35-year-old former singer ILoveMakonnen, aka Makonnen Kamali Sheran, was born in April 1989 in California, Los Angeles. Makonnen reportedly began his music journey by uploading songs on Myspace. His talent caught the attention of Metro Boomin in March 2014, who was impressed by Makonnen's work and decided to stay in touch with him.
The duo then recorded six songs together, after which Boomin introduced Makonnen to Sonny Digital and 808 Mafia, who were also impressed by his music.
The major turning point in his career came with the release of his 2014 track Tuesday. In an interview with Complex published on September 7, 2024, the former singer discussed how the song came together through a freestyle in the studio. He explained:
"I was in the room at an Ear Drummers studio, and it was a producer, Mars, with Ear Drummers, and Rae Sremmurd was there when they was still up and coming."
Makonnen added:
"Mike WiLL was, like, gone in LA... And so I got to go up to the house... We drove up there, and we was just playing around and making shit. And then it was like Monday night. I was just freestyling about it."
ILoveMakonnen shared that everyone present there believed that it was "dope." In the same interview, he reflected on how he handled the sudden fame he received after his hit track. He said that while he was getting accustomed to the fame, he also got introduced to drugs.
Shedding more light on it, Makonnen stated that at that time, he experienced a completely different mental as well as physical journey. He also highlighted the body image issues he faced at that time for being "overweight."
This wasn't the first time ILoveMakonnen has announced his retirement. Back in 2016, he first announced that he was getting retired. However, the former singer kept releasing projects. As of now, no further information about the current retirement has been found.
