Grammy-winning musician St. Vincent (born Anne Erin Clark) endorsed Kamala Harris three days before the 2024 elections in the United States on November 5, 2024.
On Friday, November 1, St. Vincent dressed up as her "Irish catholic grandmother" for Halloween and posted a photo on Instagram. The 42-year-old songstress wore a curly black wig and thick cat-eye glasses, along with a black-and-white sweater and a cigarette in her mouth.
The Cruel singer asked her followers to vote for the Democratic candidate in the upcoming elections. In the caption, she wrote:
"Happy Halloween. My costume is my Irish catholic grandmother. Go vote for @kamalaharris, Americans. My grandmother would have. She wouldn’t have stood for all this damn disrespect,"
Netizens were divided in their opinion on the endorsement. While some praised the songstress for siding with Kamala Harris, others slammed her for it. One individual commented:
"Girl, your Irish Catholic grandmother wouldn’t vote for abortion."
Several other netizens shared their take on the social media platform.
Meanwhile, others supported the songstress' endorsement of Kamala Harris.
St. Vincent has now joined a long list of musicians and industry giants who have publicly supported Kamala Harris.
Stars like Megan Thee Stallion, Jennifer Lopez, John Legend, Bad Bunny, Los Tigres Del Norte, and Taylor Swift have endorsed the current Vice President of the United States on various online or offline platforms. Notably, Sexyy Red, who endorsed Donald Trump last year, has shifted her allegiance to Kamala Harris.
Who is St. Vincent? Exploring Grammy-winning songstress's life and career
St. Vincent (aka Anne Erin Clark) is an American musician and singer known for her unique and distorted style of playing guitar. For her mastery over the instrument, she was named the 26th greatest guitarist of all time in 2023.
She was a part of bands like The Polyphonic Spree and Sufjan Stevens before forming her musical group in 2006. In 2007, she released her debut album, Marry Me. Released through Beggars Banquet Records, the album was named after a running gag in the popular television series Arrested Development. It performed modestly, selling a total of 30,000 copies by 2009.
Marry Me was followed by albums such as Actor and Strange Mercy. Strange Mercy became St. Sincent's highest-charting album at that time, peaking at #19 on the U.S. Billboard 200. However, it was quickly surpassed by her next two solo albums, St. Vincent (2014) and Masseducation (2017).
Her latest album, All Born Screaming, was released through her own Total Pleasure Records on April 26, 2024. A Spanish version of the album, titled Todos Nacen Gritando, is set to release on November 15, 2024.
In addition to her own albums, the musician produced Sleater-Kinney's ninth studio album, The Center Won't Hold (2019), and co-wrote Taylor Swift's chart-busting song, Cruel Summer. The songstress has also tried her hand at moviemaking, directing a segment of the horror anthology film XX (2017). Additionally, she co-wrote and starred in the 2020 thriller The Nowhere Inn.
In 2015, she received her first Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album for St. Vincent. She followed this with two more Grammys in the same category for Masseducation (2019) and Daddy's Home (2022).
