Charlie Puth added an Instagram story on July 27, appreciating Celine Dion's performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony amid her health struggles. Dion had been away from the live stage since 2021 following health concerns, which were later revealed to be Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS).
The Canadian singer, however, didn't let the health struggles hold her back for long and made a grand live stage comeback with the opening ceremony on Friday, July 26. Cladded in a shimmery, bead-adorned, silver-white dress, Celine Dion took over the stage set under the Eiffel Tower and sang Edith Piaf's L’Hymne A L'Amour.
Dion's comeback is a major victory for her fans and well-wishers praying for her recovery.
A longtime fan of the Canadian hitmaker, Charlie Puth couldn't hold back his praises and shared on his Instagram story:
"Céline Dion ....what she has been through and to just get up and sing like that.....no words other than astounding."
Charlie first revealed he liked Celine Dion's music in October 2022 as he appeared in an ET Canada interview.
“When I work out I listen to Celine Dion‘s ‘All By Myself. I’m going to do a little workout [soon]. And I will listen to that,” said Charlie.
A look at Celine Dion's 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony amidst her SPS diagnosis
Celine Dion's performance at the July 26 opening ceremony for the 2024 Paris Olympics came after the sets from Lady Gaga, Aya Nakamura, and other performers. Dion took the stage later in the night for the event's closing performance and played the full set of the French classic, L’Hymne A L'Amour.
A soulful piano cover backed Dion's performance along with a light rain pour. Following the event, the singer shared some pictures from the opening ceremony on Instagram along with a heartfelt caption that read:
''I’m honored to have performed tonight, for the Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony, and so full of joy to be back in one of my very favorite cities! Most of all, I’m so happy to be celebrating these amazing athletes, with all their stories of sacrifice and determination, pain and perseverance..."
The opening ceremony was held outside a stadium for the first time in Olympic history. Apart from the 600,000 people in attendance at the live event, the ceremony was also streamed live by over one billion people.
Celine Dion first revealed her SPS diagnosis in December 2022. The news was followed by the cancellation of her upcoming world tour and the singer did not perform on the live stage ever since then.
Readers must note that Stiff Person Disorder (SPS) is a neurological disease. It can cause patients to experience continuous episodes of muscle spasms, stiffness, and other similar symptoms. While there is no cure for SPS, its symptoms can be regulated through regular therapies and medications.
Although Dion didn't speak much about her struggles with SPS for a long time, she finally opened up this year through the documentary, I Am: Celine Dion. The documentary was directed by Irene Taylor and covered Dion's journey through her music, her struggles with SPS, and the humane spirit to overcome it all.
It was released as an Amazon Prime exclusive on June 25, 2024. Dion spoke to fans about her illness through the documentary and even revealed that singing restricts the muscles in her chest.
By the documentary's end, she revealed that she would like to perform again, a feat, which she accomplished this week at the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony.
