On August 9, 2024, singer Zee Machine posted a video on TikTok that compares Katy Perry and Dr. Luke's latest track Lifetimes to his 2022 track with Dave Audé called Motions. While Zee Machine doesn't say anything about the similarity of the songs, the videos show the singer playing them one after the other and giving a funny reaction in the end.
Internet users reacted to the same via social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) wherein one of the fans commented on the producer of Katy's latest track, Dr. Luke tweeting:
"Not dr Luke stealing beats"
"Lmfao. She needs to cancel this album and go back to the drawing board." another X user tweeted.
An X user suggested another song that Katy's new track sounds like,
"It also sounds like Tension by Kylie Minogue"
"Justice for him!" an internet user stated supporting Zee's claim.
On the other hand, some internet users suggested that the beat in question was a common one and defended Katy:
"Hmm i dont support katy’s direction now but tbf to her…It’s basically impossible for anyone to make a beat that hasnt been done before. second, literally nobody has heard that song… 400k streams in 2 years? You really think Katy has heard of it?" an X user suggested
"it's just a basic chord progression 💀 nothing new, nothing unusual for that type of music. i hope that video wasn't as serious" another Z user tweeted
"This is literally the most unoriginal beat…" an internet user remarked
"Lifetimes’ is a song about eternal love": Katy Perry comments on latest track
Katy Perry released the second track from her upcoming album 143 on August 8, 2024. According to Vulture, the track called Lifetimes is dedicated to the singer's daughter. Contrary to the reviews of her recent single Woman's World, Lifetimes ranked in the top 10 on the U.S. iTunes chart and is No.9 on the list.
Her track Woman's World was met with criticism owing to its sound, but it was also criticized for being produced by Dr. Luke. People criticized Katy Perry for collaborating with Dr. Luke on a track about women empowerment, given he was accused by singer Kesha of s*xual assault in 2014.
Talking about her album's new song in a press statement with Billboard, Katy Perry stated:
“‘Lifetimes’ is a song about eternal love. It’s about finding that one deep and satisfying love of your life. A soulmate doesn’t always have to come in the form of a partner – it can come in all different ways, a child, a best friend, a pet."
Katy Perry mentioned that for her, "the soulmate" is her daughter who she asks every night if she would find her in every lifetime. The Fireworks singer mentioned that when he daughter affirmatively replies to her question, she feels found telling her fans that the song is about finding each other "over and over again, for lifetimes".
In other news, Katy Perry's new album 143 is set to release on September 20, 2024, via Capitol Records. The name of the album is a code for 'I love you' and the singer also revealed the 11-song tracklist of her album in her track Lifetimes.
