On August 2, 2024, Charli XCX and Billie Eilish released a remix of the song Guess from the former's album Brat, and the track garnered a lot of attention owing to its lyrics. At the end of the track, the duo whispered:
“You wanna guess what me and Billie have been textin’ about? (You’ve been disrespectful)/ Still tryin’ to guess the password to my Google Drive (Are you obsessed with me?)/ You wanna guess the address of the party we’re at (You really are not invited)”
These lyrics led fans to come up with theories stating that Charli and Billie Eilish were dissing Taylor Swift. It was based on the fact that the Love Story singer had been dropping new albums constantly, which blocked the other two artists from reaching the top spot in streaming charts.
This theory divided fans of the singers on the internet, wherein some suggested that Charli and Billie Eilish did throw shade on Taylor Swift in Guess and one of the fans tweeted:
“You wanna guess what me and Billie have texting about” “are u obsessed w me?” oh the Taylor shade I had to giggle"
"Beyoncé and Taylor Swift can kiss AOTY [Artist of The Year.] goodbye ! Charli xcx won," a fan stated.
"That lady and her 45 album variants blocked them both from number one albums, but them having more cultural impact and critical acclaim than her in the end is most pleasing to me," another fan tweeted
On the other hand, some internet users also commented on how Charli XCX and Billie's fans unnecessarily made the new song all about Taylor Swift:
"It's never "wow Charli and Billie made a great song." You always just gotta bring up Taylor " an X user tweeted
"would hate to be Billie and Charli and having fans who make their album rollouts and releases all about Taylor Swift," another person mentioned.
"Charli xcx and Billie eilish fans CANNOT stop themselves from bringing up Taylor Swift when either one announces something or they chart and it’s hilarious like if you’re first thought is miss swift then you ain’t that dedicated to your fav artists," an X user commented.
"Can the people who do this please stop" — Charli XCX addressed fans speaking anti-Taylor Swift chants at a concert
The speculation surrounding Charli XCX's feud with Taylor Swift began after Charli released Sympathy is a Knife in June 2024. Fans alleged that the song had a reference to Taylor Swift as Charli addressed her as "this one girl taps my insecurities" and "don't wanna see her backstage at my boyfriend's show."
The line complied with the fact that the Love Story singer reportedly dated Matty Healy back in 2014. For the unversed, Healy is the frontman of a pop band called The 1975 and Charli is currently engaged to the same band's drummer, George Daniel.
However, in another instance after her concert in São Paulo, Brazil on June 23, 2024, Charli requested her fans to stop chanting "Taylor Swift is dead". The singer took to her Instagram story and stated (as quoted in Variety):
"Can the people who do this please stop. Online or at my shows. It is the opposite of what I want and it disturbs me that anyone would think there is room for this in this community. I will not tolerate it"
Charlie XCX's album Brat debuted at number 2 on the British charts and became the best-rated album of 2024 as per Metacritic. However, it was taken over by Taylor Swift's limited edition April album titled The Tortured Poets Department (TTPD).
