A brief overview of the history of Rock Am Ring and Rock Im Park festivals
The former was first conceived in 1985 as a one-time festival to celebrate the inauguration of a shorter race track. After it became successful with over 75,000 people attending it, it was made into an annual event. The first festival featured acts such as U2, Foreigner, Gianna Nannini, and more.
The festival continued as a single festival until 1993 when Rock Im Park was held in Vienna before becoming the twin to Rock Am Ring. The first dual edition featured acts such as INXS, Faith No More, Robert Plant, and Def Leppard, among many others.
Subsequently, in 1994, Rock Im Park was held at the disused Munich-Riem airport, before moving again to Munich's Olympiastadion. Rock Im Park was subsequently held at the Frankenstadion, Nuremberg till 2004. The venue then moved to Zeppelinfeld, Nuremberg. The festival has been held at the same venue since aside from 2006's edition which was held at Luitpoldhain, Nuremberg.
The Ring festival, meanwhile, has been held at the same venue aside from the 2015 and 2016 editions, when it was held at the former military base of (Mendig Air Base/Vulkaneifel).
The two festivals have witnessed an increased crowd count over the years, with occasional dips in between. The two festivals have had 72,000 as their highest crowd count.
Over the years, aside from the aforementioned acts, the festivals have over the years also seen acts like Linkin Park, Green Day, Muse, System of A Down, Foo Fighters, Bad Religion, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and countless more.
