Chappell Roan gushed about Miley Cyrus and her influence on her career. During the Disney Legends Ceremony that took place on Sunday, August 11, at the D23 Expo, Miley Cyrus received the Disney Legends Award. Roan introduced her, praising Cyrus' artistry and impact.
"The thing that I admire about Miley Cyrus is that she constantly reinvents herself and always works," Roan said.
Chappell Roan shared that her first-ever concert was Miley's Best Of Both Worlds Tour and also stated that she wanted to be like Miley's alter ego, one of Disney's most famous characters ever, Hannah Montana.
"I think Miley just like, feels like Freedom to me"— Chappell Roan
During Sunday's D23 Expo at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, Wrecking Ball hitmaker Miley Cyrus was presented with the Disney Legends Award, officially making her a certified Disney Legend. When Chappell Roan introduced Miley to collect her award, the singer explained how Miley Cyrus constantly reinvented herself and how it always worked for the singer.
"For a lot of artists, it can seem inauthentic or out of the blue, but she’s very open about her transformations artistically and personally. She puts out music that is so authentic," Roan said.
Chappell Roan recalled that the first concert she ever attended was Miley’s Best Of Both Worlds Tour with the Jonas Brothers opening. She reminisced:
"She came down in a box from the ceiling. I was like, ‘How do I do that one day?’ I still think about it. I still think about the show. I want to be like Hannah Montana."
To this day, Roan feels like she is Hannah Montana. The singer explained that there were a lot of crossovers between Miley Cyrus and her own project and gushed that she was "such a fan too". Roan talked about how she loved Miley's "families" and noted how the singer had a "whole world" around her that supported her.
Roan felt like Miley Cyrus could "do anything", which was an aspect that she wished to incorporate into her project. Just like how she felt that Miley Cyrus did any type of thing and it just worked, Chappell Roan too wanted to feel that freedom. She said:
"I think Miley just like, feels like Freedom to me."
Chappell Roan has previously praised Miley Cyrus on multiple occasions. In a July episode of Drew Afualo's The Comment Section podcast, the singer gushed about how Miley Cyrus invited her to a party and she professed to Cyrus that she was her first concert. She also talked about her affection for Hannah Montana and wished to be able to hide her identity like the iconic character.
"I loved that Hannah had two different personalities because it’s my f**king hair that gets me in trouble all the time. So, I wish I would’ve done her," Roan had said.
Apart from Chappell Roan, Cyrus also received heartfelt messages from Barbra Walters and John Travolta during the D23 convention. Cyrus also sang along to Lainey Wilson's rendition of the Hannah Montana theme song Best of Both Worlds before taking to the stage for an emotional speech.
Cyrus revealed that she wrote two speeches for the night, one if she was scared and another if she was the "bada*s" that she was. She revealed that she was scared and talked about how undergoing that fear was how legends were made. The singer said that it was "legendary to be afraid" and then do what you set out to do anyway.
"This award is dedicated to Hannah,"— Miley Cyrus in her award receiving speech
The singer, who became the youngest-ever recipient of the Disney Legends Award, recalled her audition for Hannah Montana, poked fun at her few controversial eras, and concluded her speech with an emotional statement. She said:
"A little bit of everything has changed since that day, but at the same time, nothing has changed at all. I stand here still proud to have been Hannah Montana because she made Miley in so many ways."
Miley added:
"This award is dedicated to Hannah and all of her amazing, loyal fans, and to everyone who has made my dream a reality. To quote the legend herself, ‘This is the life.’"
Disney's Hannah Montana ran for four seasons from 2006 to 2011 and established Miley Cyrus as a force to be reckoned with. The show is currently available to stream on Disney Plus.
