English actress Helen Mirren recently sat down with Evening Standard’s podcast Brave New World where she got candid about late American musician Kurt Cobain and mourned his untimely demise at the age of 27 in April 1994. In the podcast that was released on October 24, she shared how “sad” it made her think that Cobain missed the joys of the modern world, such as GPS.

“I always say, it’s so sad that Kurt Cobain died when he did; because he never saw GPS. GPS is the most wonderful thing, to watch my little blue spot walking down the street. I just find it completely magical and unbelievable,” the 79-year-old shared.

Kurt Cobain’s topic came up while Helen Mirren was discussing the good and bad sides of aging.

“If you’re lucky, you get to be older. And then there you are. Oh my God, I’m 79! I never thought I’d be 79. And then you say, OK, well this is it. This is what 79 is, you know. And it’s kind of OK. It’s not brilliant, but it was not that brilliant to be 25 either, so it’s not a question of seeking youth at all,” she added.

The Prime Suspect star further explained how it was “a question of living the life you have as fully and positively and enjoyably and confusingly” as possible while staying in touch with one’s younger self.

Amid her now-viral remarks about Cobain, the internet is having diverse reactions. For instance, Reddit user @OysterPunk commented on @mcfw31’s post on the @r/fauxmoi community page where she referenced news outlet Variety’s article on the same.

“Apparently she talks about him regularly in this context. It’s like the Gaga 100 people in the room,” the Redditor wrote.

Several others joined the conversation and shared similar reactions about Mirren talking about Cobain in her recent interview.

“I get what she’s saying. You live long enough and you see incredible things that you never could have imagined. This seems small to us, but remember how old she is,” a person wrote.
“Weird thing to say but if it keeps Kurt Cobain remembered, keep talking about him,” another person wrote.
“Helen Mirren, Kurt Cobain, and GPS being in the same sentence is so unexpected. I love it,” one person wrote.
“I’m crying, so beautiful,” a user wrote.

Others continued to share their opinions on whether or not Kurt Cobain would have enjoyed using GPS and other modern-day wonders.

“She is yapping... Kurt Cobain, you would’ve loved GPS,” a fan wrote.
“Unless his real self was drastically different from his public persona, I'm not entirely sure he would've geeked out over his little blue dot on Google Maps. But I think it's so sweet that Dame Helen is excited by this,” one fan wrote.
“Poor Kurt. He would’ve loved find my iPhone,” an individual wrote.
"I think if Kurt Cobain was alive today, he'd take one look at social media and immediately end it again," wrote another.

Elsewhere during the conversation, The Audience actress shared how “grateful” she was to be part of a “generation that knew the world before technology,” while also embracing the present “world of technology,” something that Kurt missed in his lifetime.

Notably, during her podcast appearance, Helen Mirren admitted to host Evgeny Lebedev, that she “always” brings up the topic of Cobain while discussing aging.

Helen Mirren has previously mentioned Kurt Cobain in similar contexts

This is not the first time Helen Mirren has talked about Kurt Cobain while discussing the topic of growing old. For instance, in 2014, she told Oprah.com in response to Oprah Winfrey’s comment about “accepting the age you are in,” that the Nirvana founder “hardly even saw a computer,” or the other “digital stuff” that kept her “excited” and “curious” to see “what happens next.”

The following year, during an interview with the magazine Cosmopolitan, she reiterated her previous remarks.

“You either die young or you die old, there’s nothing in between and I’m glad I didn’t die young. I was thinking about Kurt Cobain the other day and he died without knowing the internet, and I’m totally blown away by that,” she noted at the time.

Subsequently, in 2016, while talking to the Daily Mail, he regretted the musician’s untimely passing and shared, “If I’d died at 27, the age that Kurt Cobain died in 1994, I’d never have even known there was an internet! Incredible things are happening all the time and I can’t wait to see what comes next.”

In 2020, she once again appeared on Oprah.com and shared her insights on “anti-aging products.”

“You can’t avoid aging. I think about Kurt Cobain and all that he missed. I mean, how sad is it that he never knew about GPS,” she mentioned back then.

Notably, Mirren and Cobain weren’t known to be associated despite being part of the entertainment industry. It also remains undisclosed whether they knew each other or shared a friendship. While Helen is 79, Kurt would have been 57 if he was alive.
