More details on Snoop Dogg’s appearance in Fortnite and his affinity for the gaming industry
For the unversed, Fortnite is an online video game created by the American game developer, Epic Games, in 2017. Fortnite features six game mode versions which generally involve players fighting for survival amidst an open-world environment.
According to reports, Snoop Dogg will appear in the game’s upcoming season as a Hydraulic Car Mythic, lending elements to the game reminiscent of a popular music video game, Lowrider, by PlayStation.
The rapper’s Hydraulic Car feature is also in line with his West Coast hip-hop aesthetic. Snoop Dogg’s entry into Fortnite is coming after a leak by HYPEX in July 2024, about the rapper getting his skin in the game.
It was reported that Snoop would be joining other artists like The Weekend, Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish, Metallica, and Karol G, amongst others, who already have skins in Fortnite.
The full extent of the collaboration is still under wraps leading fans and media to speculate as to what his presence in the game could entail, although HYPEX revealed that Snoop would feature in an in-game concert to be released in October 2024. However, nothing has been officially confirmed yet.
Snoop has a history with the Fortnite franchise. In November 2023, he and his son, Cordell Broadus, launched Death Row Games to help diverse creators publish content on Fortnite via the game’s Creative tool set and the editing app, Unreal Editor. Cordell Broadus spoke with the Los Angeles Times about his father’s affinity for gaming. He said:
“Myself and my father, we’re avid gamers. We’ve witnessed the power of video games and how impactful storytelling is, and we just wanted to provide an immersive experience that represents the neighborhoods and the places that we come up from.”
He continued on their vision for the gaming industry and creators:
"It’s about creating a platform for under-served creators to feel like they’re a part of the narrative, and also financially be a part of the narrative. This is why we wanted to focus on building in “Fortnite” first because they’re doing revenue share with their creators in their Fortnite Creators world. That was so appealing to us."
Snoop Dogg has showcased his love for gaming on various occasions. In 2022, he struck a partnership with gaming company, Activision, to enable fans to play as Snoop in the Call of Duty Mobile, Call of Duty: Warzone, and Call of Duty: Vanguard. In June 2022, he spoke with Vibe magazine about his love for gaming. When asked how he came to partner with the franchise, he stated:
“I’m a gamer. That’s why they put me in them. Authenticity, ya digg. I take everything with me on the road, so I can play in hotels too. My top 2 off top.. Call of Duty and Madden. Gaming wouldn’t be where it’s at without these two. Easy. Then GTA and FIFA.”
