KayCyy claimed that Playboi Carti wanted to sign him to his Opium record label and fans went crazy. KayCyy took to X on Thursday, August 29 to engage in a small Q & A session with fans via tweets and replies. Due to it being the third anniversary of the release of Ye's Donda, which he worked on, the rapper wanted fans to ask questions about Ye's Donda era.
One fan asked the rapper if he had ever met or worked with Playboi Carti during this period and the rapper replied:
"He wanted to sign me at a point of time."
When another fan asked him why he did not end up signing with Carti, KayCyy said:
"I couldn’t go home to my mom with an upside down cross lol,"
Yet another fan asked KayCyy what Playboi Carti smelled like and the rapper replied with a single word, "Roses." In a follow-up to the previous question about Carti wanting to sign him, Our Generation Music, wanted the rapper to respond to a few DMs.
However, KayCyy refused to oblige as he claimed that the outlet never dropped an interview, which he allegedly did with "Hakeem".
Social media users were not too sure what to make of KayCyy's Carti revelation. One X user even joked that he was spreading misinformation for fun. The X user tweeted:
Many X users had similar reactions to the rapper allegedly spreading misinformation and lying. Others thought the rapper was looking for attention and argued that the upside cross was not a bad sign. Here are a few X reactions:
"Me when I spread misinformation on the internet," said one X user.
"me when i lie for no reason," joked another user.
"Nobody: That friend who always looking for attention:", said another X user.
"upside down cross isn't even a bad sign", thought another X user.
However, a handful of social media users believed KayCyy and respected his decision to not be signed to Playboi Carti's label because of his religious beliefs.
"people saying he’s lying like they weren’t working together like crazy in 2020-2021?", noted one X user.
"why wouldn’t this be true", asked another user.
"Facts Can only respect that", noted another X user.
"the ones who said it’s cap never thought for themselves", thought another user.
KayCyy and Playboi Carti both worked on 'Donda'
KayCyy is a Kenyan-born American rapper, singer, and producer, who has worked alongside several high-profile artists. Born Mark Makora Mbogo, the musician was heavily involved with Ye's 10th studio album Donda. As per a 2022 Billboard report, Ye's manager Abou “Bu” Thiam claimed that the musician had put out around 300 reference tracks for the project.
Apart from having writing credits on the album's tracks like 24, and Hurricane, he also provided vocals for Keep My Spirit Alive Pt. 2, which was released as part of the album's deluxe edition. He initially had vocals on the first part of the song, which featured on the main album but was later replaced by Ye himself.
Hurricane ended up becoming a hit, debuting at No. 1 on Billboard’s Streaming Songs chart and peaking at No. 6 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The soulful track also took home the Best Melodic Rap Performance at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards.
Playboi Carti was also featured on Donda, appearing on the tracks Off the Grid alongside Fivio Foreign, Junya, and Junya Pt. 2 alongside Ty Dolla Sign. Playboi Carti and KayCyy both appeared at Ye's listening events to promote the album.
Apart from Donda, KayCyy has also worked with Ye on the single Wash Us in the Blood, Travis Scott on the track Thank God from Utopia, and Lil Wayne on his album Funeral.
