The 2024 Olympics closing ceremony's first half was held on August 11, 2024 at the Stade de France. The ceremony saw the French indie band Phoenix perform alongside Ezra Koenig, Air, and DJ-producer Kavinsky, Angèle. The performance saw fans rejoice when it went live, as exemplified by the tweet below:

"Phoenix playing the Olympic closing ceremonies with Ezra Koenig is such a victory for millennial culture. We made it, you guys."

Some fans reacted to the performance by pointing out the band's importance in millenial culture:

"This truly was an Olympics for the millennials - Justice, Phoenix, M83 - French music had a real renaissance from 2007-2011 right when we were all graduating/going the club" one fan reacted.
"You guys are one of my favorite bands & that was amazing...merci", another fan reacted.
"The scream I let out when I saw Ezra Koenig from Vampire Weekend performing with Phoenix at the Paris 2024 Olympics," a fan exclaimed.
"Phoenix, Air, and Vampire Weekend. This portion of the 2024 Olympic Closing Ceremonies was designed specifically for emo kids circa 2008.", one netizen stated.
"Loved that 1901 song by Phoenix at the Olympics closing ceremony tonight.. fun song!" another netizen commented.

More on 2024 Olympics closing ceremony by Phoenix and more

Phoenix further elaborated on their performance at the 2024 Olympics closing ceremony in a general press statement after their performance on August 12, 2024, stating:

"We are infinitely happy to have had the chance to celebrate with all the athletes and the entire world at the Closing of the Olympic Games in our beloved city of Paris."

The band continued:

"It was a wonderful moment to have been invited to take the stage with our friends from France and around the world, honoring the French spirit and remaining true to our motto: Liberté, Égalité, Phoenix! We are thrilled to both pass the baton to the Paralympics athletes and to Los Angeles for the forthcoming 2028 games."

The second half of the closing ceremony of 2024 Olympics saw the handover from Paris to Los Angeles, with the latter city set to host the 2028 Olympics. The handover saw performances by Billie Eilish, Snoop Dogg and Red Hot Chilli Peppers, among others. They were all produced by Ben Winston in collaboration with the French Olympics Closing Ceremony producers.

After the 2024 Olympics closing ceremony music performances, the mayor of the city, Karen Bass received the Olympic Torch and took it home with her to be kept safe till it is used again for the 2028 Olympics.

Los Angeles became the 2028 Olympics host at the same time as Paris did for 2024, after no other city submitted bids for hosting the event.

This represents the latest development in the crisis that has been affecting the Olympic Games in recent years, with the number of bids to host the Games dwindling from 12 bids in 2004 to just two for 2024.

The lowering number of bids represents the second such cycle in the Games's recent history, with the tumultous Games of 1968 in Mexico, 1972 in West Germany, and the 1976 one in Montreal leading to just one bid for the 1984 games, won by Los Angeles by virtue of being the only one to bid.

The 1984 Games is also rare due to the fact that it is one of the few games in which the host city made a profit from the event, with the cost of hosting Olympic Games often leading to financial loss for host cities in other years.
