On June 18, during her Eras Tour in Cardiff, Taylor Swift surprised fans with a performance of I Forgot That You Existed and This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things. Fans linked this diss mashup to her feud with Scooter Braun.
For those unversed, the conflict began in June 2019 when Braun's company, Ithaca Holdings, bought Big Machine Label Group for $300 million, acquiring the rights to Swift's first six albums: Speak Now, Fearless, 1989, Red, and Reputation. This deal meant Swift lost her rights to these albums.
Now, after the mashup, fans were quick to point out that Swift dedicated the songs to Braun. They took to X to comment on the same.
“Buying Taylor Swift’s masters was the beginning of the end for Scooter Braun, he just announced that he is retiring lmao”, someone wrote on X.
“Scooter Braun retiring in the middle of Taylor Swift's Eras Tour being the highest grossing musical tour EVER is peak Karma Is A God”, another one commented.
“I forgot that you existed? as in the first song taylor swift ever owned? right after the news that is retiring broke? oh taylor swift the woman that you are”, said someone else.
“And it’s his birthday today….”, another user pointed out.
Other X users also thought the same thing:
“I love her so bad this is so good”, said another Swiftie.
“WAIT HE'S RETIRING AND BROKE??? that makes it so much funnier,” another one hilariously commented, referring to the fact that Braun is retiring.
“On scooters birthday after he retired and the day after J** bashes her in an article for writing songs. She is a petty queen and took care of 2 birds with one stone. Love her”, one user said.
“The beauty of it is, with one swing she took out YB and Scooter. She is so hilarious-I just can't stop laughing!!” another user said, jokingly, and referring to Joe Alwyn, whose first job was being a ‘yogurt boy’.
Taylor Swift and Scooter Braun’s feud started in 2019 over Swift’s records
The 34-year-old singer surprised the Swifties with the two unexpected songs during her three-hour performance at Principality Stadium. Swifties quickly linked these tracks to Scooter Braun, especially since the mashup occurred a day after he announced his retirement as a music manager and on his birthday.
However, during the performance, Swift did not refer to Braun or their long-running legal battle over the master recordings of her first six albums.
As per several reports, when Braun acquired Swift's former record label, Big Machine Records for $300 million, that same year, Swift objected to Braun taking ownership of the master recordings for her first six albums.
Claiming to be the victim of "constant, manipulative bullying," she declared she would re-record these albums to obtain the master recordings.
Since then, Taylor has been re-recording and re-releasing each album under Taylor's Versions. But the Pop Queen still has two albums to reissue: Taylor Swift and Reputation.
But it's important to remember that these are all just hypotheses, and the Lover singer hasn't commented on them as of yet.
