The well-known music group TGT reunited at the Essence Festival 2024, which began on July 4, 2024. Videos from the event showed all three band members wearing white outfits as they took the stage. The group included Tyrese Gibson, known for his work as a singer and actor, followed by Ginuwine and Tank, who are also active musicians.
TGT's performance was held on Saturday, July 6, and a viral video shows Tank speaking on the microphone. He is heard saying as the audience cheers for them in the background:
"What you're witnessing right now hasn't happened in 10 years."
He also said:
"For those of you who don't know, my name is Tank and I'm the muscle of the group."
Ginuwine then introduced himself, saying that he was the "fine wine" of the group. Tyrese then says:
"We got some real chocolate lovers here. I can't hear y'all."
TGT released one album and they were active for eight years: Members and other details explained
The members of the US-based group were close friends and the band was established back in 2007. The name of the band was derived from the initial letters of the members' names and their first project was a song titled Please Don't Go.
After a long break of six years, the group's debut album, Three Kings, came out in 2013. It had 17 songs in the soundtrack and managed to reach on top of the charts. Following the release of three more songs, the group separated in 2015 and Tyrese Gibson announced the same through Instagram.
However, the post led to some criticism since the F9 star stated that Ginuwine wouldn't be a part of TGT anymore. He also wrote:
"We will forever love our brother G as brothers… We've got too much history to turn this into anything negative… Even 112 are still together, next, Dru Hill is still together and Troop and New Edition, It's only 3 of us we did one album it was epic… … And now it's over… …"
As mentioned, all three members are well-established in different fields. Tyrese Gibson has become a popular face after portraying Roman Pearce in Fast & Furious films. As a solo artist, he has six albums in his credits alongside several songs.
Ginuwine, also known as Elgin Baylor Lumpkin, started his musical career before TGT was formed. The Washington D.C. native's last major project was A Ginuwine Christmas in 2011 and even participated in The Masked Singer.
The third member Tank, whose real name is Durrell Artaze Babbs, has four nominations at the Grammy Awards. Although he continues being active in the music industry, the 2022 album R&B Money marked his last big project since he lost hearing ability in the right ear.
Tyrese Gibson and Tank address the reasons behind the breakup of TGT
Tyrese appeared alongside Durrell in an episode of the podcast, R&B Money, in March 2023, where they spoke up on TGT's split. Talking about why the band broke up, Gibson replied:
"I didn't even give neither one of the them the heads up that I was gonna present my market share […] First of all, I gotta defend myself 'cause we ain't finna be out here crazy. Without even getting into numbers 'cause that ain't nobody's business, what the conversation was because I don't do shows that often, when I finally do shows, I'm able to demand a certain number."
He continued by saying that the split "didn't work" for him because they were supposed to sign a deal. He additionally stated that Ginuwine has still not moved on after 10 years. Tank addressed his disappointment with everything that happened during the split and added:
"I think there comes a time where – because for me – you're my friend, and so a bottom line in business starts to feel like you're not just negotiating against me, but tryna make sure you're standing above me."
Billboard states that TGT was planning to start working on their second album in 2016. However, things did not work out since Ginuwine was reportedly willing to exit the band.
