Travis Scott just dropped a brand new single, titled 4X4, which was distributed to all major streaming platforms on Friday (January 24) via Cactus Jack Records, under an exclusive license to Epic Records and Sony Music Entertainment.

Marking his first official release for the year, Travis' latest single is his first solo release since he dropped his fourth studio album, Utopia, which was distributed to streaming platforms in 2023.

Earlier this week, Travis live-debuted 4X4 during his halftime performance at the 2025 College Football Playoff National Championship at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium, on January 20.

The rapper also announced that he would release associated merchandise for his new song, which will reportedly support Direct Relief’s wildfire relief efforts to assist rehabilitation efforts for those affected by the LA wildfires.

With news media outlets reposting Travis' new single across platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram, several users were seen sharing their opinions on 4X4. Multiple individuals appeared to call out the track's mix, with one user claiming the engineering to be "terrible".

More reactions followed, with users sharing similar reactions to 4X4's mixing and sound engineering.

"[The] mixing on 4x4 is horrendous im sorry," said one user.
"WHY IS 4X4 SO BADLY MIXED," a fan tweeted.
"Sh*t sounds like if you told ChatGPT to create a hype Travis Scott song with AI," another added.

Travis Scott fans were seen defending his latest single by shutting down critics who were calling out 4X4's mixing.

"Its a great song its just the autotune & the reverb sounds off," said one individual.
"Mixing is fine. Just say you don’t like how the vocals were done creatively," added another.
"When did u n****s wake up and become music engineers holy fu*k," another individual stated.

Travis Scott fans appeared thrilled at the release of 4X4 with one fan even drawing comparisons to his 2019 single Highest In The Room.

"It sound almost EXACTLY like Highest In The Room," a user claimed.
"It just needs another verse and then it would be a completely fine song," a fan added.

Travis Scott drops first single for the year titled '4X4': A Review

Following 4X4 being distributed to all streaming platforms, several fans and critics were seen calling out the record for having a bad mix. The track was composed by Travis Scott, with mixing and mastering being handled by industry legend Mike Dean.

Today (January 25), Travis Scott took to X to address complaints from his fanbase, acknowledging their concerns in a tweet where he claims to have fixed the mix issue for 4X4.

With many anticipating the record to be part of the official rollout for his yet-to-be-announced fifth studio album, Travis' 4X4 has garnered significant attention in the day following its release.

Travis also thrilled fans by unveiling the official music video for 4X4 which features multiple interesting sequences directed by Gabriel Moses. Notable shots include Scott fighting inside what appears to be a WWE ring, performing next to a college band at a football field, and getting into a police chase.

Travis teamed up with producers Tay Keith and FNZ to help put together the hard trap instrumental for 4X4, whose name appears to be inspired by Scott's four-wheel drive Lamborghini Urus.

The composition also reportedly includes samples of Tenessee State Marching Band horns as well as Travis' staple beat switch, most notably used in his 2018 smash hit SICKO MODE (feat. Drake). Notable themes explored in 4X4 have been provided below:

  • Luxury
  • Wealth
  • Excess
  • Substance Abuse
  • Philandering

"Four-by-four, I tint my windows up, yeah (Windows up), yeah / Damn, lil' bro, he did it, one-and-done (One-and–, one-and-done), yeah / Out my closet, that sh*t none-of-none (None-of-none), yeah"

Travis kicks off 4X4 by introducing listeners to the trap record's spacy hook, fueled by intense reverb and delays. The track finds Scott exploring themes of luxury and privacy, alongside lines that find him flexing his highly exclusive wardrobe and fashion collection.

"That's a vibe, that's a one-of-one (Vibe), yeah / Pillow talk (Talk), yeah, make you numb, can you run? Can you come? / Girl, fu*k the sun, find the moon, find some fun (Fun) / Yeah, hеlla fumes in the room, one-of-nonе (One), yeah, yeah, yeah"

He continues by speaking to his intimate desires, citing moments of pillow talking and sleeping with someone he considers a "one-of-one".

(Verse 1)

"Like a pro, not a rook', bend your back, touch your toes (Yeah) / Hit a batch, take the sack, can you roll? (Yeah) / With my Xanax, I relax, take control (Ooh) / We'll get 'em back, they too close (They too close)"

Listeners are then introduced to 4X4's first verse, where Travis Scott speaks on his excessive lifestyle, from referencing instances of substance abuse to using sports metaphors to seemingly recount his s*x life.

"Ain't no watchin' me, no in the scope (In the scope) / Fix your energy, your inner soul (Inner soul) / Do you love me? Man, I need to know (Need to know, need to, need to, need)"

The verse ends with a bar where Travis appears to be speaking to someone close to him, asking this individual to "fix their energy" while simultaneously wishing to explore the depth of this relationship.

(Verse 2)

"Highest one (It's lit) / Talkin' that smoke, n***a, might dirty your lungs (Ah), yeah / Eighteen carats in her gums, yeah (Ice) / Said you wan' feel some', put that on your tongue, yeah (Let's go)"

After running through the hook a second time, listeners are introduced to Travis Scott's second verse, while Moses' visuals draw the audience into 4X4's dystopic vignettes.

The verse kicks off with a call back to his 2019 hit Highest In The Room before Travis begins to flex his wealth and luxurious lifestyle.

"713 that code, 456 on road (Four-by-) / Four-by-four I swerve, five percent, tint windows (Sh*t, I swerve) / Gotta be tens at least, I one V. three these ho*s (One V. three) / And they love takin' us up, they scrape it right out of the bowl (Out of the pot)"

Travis then shouts out his hometown of Houston, when referencing the 713 code which is one of the city's oldest area codes, before using "456," a reference to the former North American Numbering Plan (NANP), to suggest he's been traveling outside the country very often.

Other themes he explores in this bar seem to revolve around philandering, excess, womanizing, and substance abuse.

"Got plenty of zaza, we takin' 'em high (Let's go) / He wanna just smoke with La Flame, but don't wanna hotbox (It's lit) / What's in my cup? It's pink, I crush my valentines (Straight up) / Said, "Do you love me, bae?" I need to know (Ah)"

The verse ends with Travis shouting out his alter-ego La Flame, a name he gave himself to represent his "fiery passion for music," when highlighting why his fanbase is extremely willing to smoke weed with him. The song's hook returns one final time before 4X4 officially closes out.

While it's unclear whether 4X4 marks the start of an album rollout or acts as a standalone release, Travis Scott has been gearing up for a massive year, evidenced by the multiple teasers and snippets he dropped all through 2024.
