Ice Cube explained the meaning behind a lyric from his latest single, It's My Ego, and fans had much to say. The line from his latest track, 'I was Kendrick before Kendrick,' struck out as many speculated what it meant. It's My Ego was the first track to drop from Ice Cube's upcoming project Man Down, set for a November 22 release.
In an interview with SiriusXM's Rock the Bells Radio on Wednesday, October 23, the West Coast legend was asked to expand upon the lyrics. After joking about whether he had to, the rapper explained:
"A provocative artist – an artist that said what I felt, put it all out there, very critical of the system and the government and what we have to go through as Black people in this country. And I think he's the same kind of artist. Thought-provoking artist. And so, I was that before he was."
Many social media users acknowledged Ice Cube's line as a great compliment to Kendrick Lamar. One X user who went by @lispy_wolf stated:
"This is such a good compliment from a legend."
Similar reactions followed as social media users who were Kendrick fans acknowledged Ice Cube's legacy and saw the lyric as one "king" recognizing another. Here are a few X reactions to Cube's explanation:
"King recognizes king," one X user said.
"He ain't wrong! A lot of ppl forget Cube is HIM!" A second user added.
"As a Dot fan, I see no lies." Another user commented.
However, a few Kendrick Lamar fans did not see the lyric in a positive light and went after Cube by asking what his point was.
"He was alive before Kendrick so what's the point?" One X user asked.
"Dude is washed…legend but time to hangem' up ma guy," a second user added.
"Anytime you have to insert yourself in others success is blatant hating to me," another user commented.
"He's just trynna associate himself with the goat lol," another netizen said.
Ice Cube opened up about Friday 4
In other news, Ice Cube confirmed that a fourth sequel is on the way for his 1995 comedy cult classic movie Friday, which saw Ice Cube starring alongside Chris Tucker. Cube confirmed last June in an interview with Flavor Flav that the sequel finally received "some traction" with Warner Bros. He said at the time:
"They have new leadership. My man Mike DeLuca, who used to be at New Line when I first started, when I first did the first Friday and Players Club and All About the Benjamins — Mike DeLuca was there, so now he's running Warner Bros."
Cube opened up about the movie during an October 21 appearance on the Million Dollaz Worth of Game podcast. He said:
"It's coming back. We gonna do it. We gonna make it dope, make it funny, bring it up to date, introduce new characters, bring back old characters, create the feeling the movie gives you."
Ice Cube explained that everybody loved Friday because "everyone experienced it" and lived it. The rapper explained that everyone has lived "a thousand Fridays." The first Friday movie was followed up with 2000's Next Friday and 2002's Friday After Next.
