Ariana Grande and Demi Lovato are both successful singer-songwriters with a lot in common. Both of them started as actors in their careers, with Grande being a Nickelodeon alum and Lovato being a Disney alum, before pivoting into music.
The two are also only one year apart, with Lovato being 31 and Grande being 30. Lovato and Grande have been friends since 2011. They also collaborated on a track from Lovato's seventh studio album in 2021.
From celebrating birthdays to making music together, the two singers appear to have been close friends for years.
Ariana Grande and Demi Lovato are "super chill" when they hang out
In August 2018, Demi Lovato was in a cover story interview with Billboard, where she confessed how much she disliked fake people. She said the people who didn't like to chill at home were only interested in being seen with her. Then, pointing out that her friendship with Grande was the opposite of that, Lovato said:
"When Ariana Grande and I hang out, it’s super chill. One time I went over to her place. She had never heard of the Charles Manson murders."
The friends then decided to take a hike to Charles Manson's Cielo Drive house and rang the doorbell, saying, "We were spooking ourselves out!"
In 2019, when Ariana Grande was on her Sweetener World Tour, Lovato attended her show in London on her 27th birthday. Demi also posted a video of Grande, Braun, and the team doing a quick prayer for her birthday before going on stage on X.
In another Billboard interview a year later, Demi Lovato, while talking about the more recent friendships of her life that had helped her "pull through," mentioned Ariana Grande's name. Lovato confessed that she reconnected with Grande in 2018 upon signing with Scooter Braun.
Elaborating on the nature of their friendship, the Sorry Not Sorry singer said:
“I love the fact that Ariana and I have such a supportive friendship because it’s hard to find. Two women who are in a competitive industry—the whole world seems to want to pit women against each other, so it would be so easy to do that.”
Ariana Grande and Demi Lovato collaborated on Met Him Last Night in 2021
Shortly after her seventh studio album, Dancing With The Devil... The Art of Starting Over, was released in April 2021, Demi Lovato was the guest in a TikTok Headstream segment where she was asked about her friendship with Ariana Grande. Their hashtagable nickname, #Dariana, was also brought up in the session, to which Lovato said:
“It's nice to see my name mashed up with someone else's who's gonna be a friend forever.”
The No Promises singer went on to talk about how her name was sometimes liked by people who were no longer a part of her life, which made her "sad," further saying:
"But I know Ariana's the one that's always gonna be there. I love 'Dariana'."
In the Headstream session, Lovato also opened up about the story behind Met Him Last Night, a track from her seventh album, which happened to be a collaboration between her and Ariana Grande.
The Confident singer mentioned how it all started in 2018 when Lovato played songs from her then-upcoming album for Ari, and one of the tracks was Dancing With The Devil. After hearing it, Grande was inspired to write a song for Lovato, which she felt "would be perfect" for her, helping her "tell her story." And that's how Met Him Last Night was created.
When Demi, who found the song to be "incredible," suggested that they sing it together, Ariana Grande initially refused. The 7 Rings singer pointed out,
"This is for you. I want you to do your thing, I can do harmonies and just be in the background."
But when Lovato insisted, the two worked on it together.
"I'm just so grateful for her and our friendship. I love her so much."
When asked what the collaboration process was like, Lovato confessed that it was "remote" because of the COVID lockdown, with both the singers recording their parts from their respective home studios.
"I wish we would've gotten to be in the studio together singing it, would've been wild. Maybe we'll just have to do another collaboration so that can happen."
It has been three years since Lovato's album came out, and the fans of both singer-songwriters are awaiting another Lovato-Grande collaboration.
