Michelle Obama and Beyonce's friendship goes way back and started when Queen Bey sang at one of Barack Obama's inauguration balls when he was elected President of the United States in 2009. The Knowles-Carter household has always been a close confidant of the Obamas and both parties have raved about each other at various events in the past.
Once, Michelle Obama even quipped that she would've become Beyonce if she were not the First Lady of the United States of America.
January 20, 2009: Beyonce sings at Barack Obama's inaugural ball after being elected President
On January 20, 2009, Queen Bey sang Etta James' At Last at one of the inauguration balls of Barack Obama. The song had Michelle and Barack swaying on the dance floor as Beyonce sang the chartbuster from Cadillac Records.
The newly crowned First Lady was clad in a white gown made of ivory silk chiffon with Swarovski and organza crystals sprinkled all over. The gown was designed by designer Jason Wu.
May 3, 2011: Beyonce joins Michelle Obama's Let's Move initiative
A cafeteria full of kids got the surprise of their lives when Beyonce performed a dance routine with them and encouraged them to fight childhood obesity. The initiative by Queen Bey was to promote Michelle Obama's Let's Move campaign, which aims to prevent the childhood onset of obesity among Americans.
The former First Lady of the United States launched the Let's Move campaign in 2010. The initiative was responsible for curating tips and tricks on how to incorporate better lifestyle and food habits for households and schools to prevent childhood obesity.
July 16, 2012: Beyonce writes a handwritten letter to Michelle Obama
Beyonce penned a handwritten letter of appreciation to Michelle Obama on her website. In the letter, she described the former first lady as the pinnacle of a strong African-American woman.
"No matter the pressure, and the stress of being under the microscope - she's humble, loving, and sincere. Michelle, thank you so much for every single thing that u do for us - I am proud to have my daughter grow up in a world where she has people like you to look up to," wrote Bey in her letter to Michelle.
July 30, 2015: Michelle Obama reveals that she wants to be Beyonce
In an interview posted on Michelle Obama's Instagram account, the former FLOTUS was asked a series of questions by rapper Wale. In one of the questions, Wale asked:
"“If you had the opportunity to have a different occupation, what would it be?"
Michelle Obama replied:
“I would be Beyoncé. I’ve got the hands.”
Former FLOTUS talked about wanting to be Bey when a similar question was asked in 2012 by PEOPLE magazine.
“Gosh. If I had some gift, I’d be Beyoncé, I’d be some great singer. The power of music, being able to play an instrument … It looks like musicians just have the most fun,” answered Mrs. Obama.
April 16, 2019: Beyonce writes another essay for Michelle
In 2019, Michelle Obama was named one of TIME's 100 Most Influential People and Beyonce wrote another heartfelt essay to the former FLOTUS. According to Queen Bey, she loved Michelle because of the way she carried herself.
The Cowboy Carter artist further stated that Michelle had reached places that a quintessential black American couldn't think of reaching in society.
"When I first met her, I was embraced by a warm, regal, confident woman who possessed a reassuring calm, on the eve of President Obama’s historic first Inauguration. The way she looked, walked and spoke, in that warm but authoritative tone, we saw our mothers and sisters," wrote the Grammy winner.
According to Bey, the thing that made Michelle special was that she used her powerful position to make the world better. For instance, she started the initiative called Reach Higher, which encouraged people to complete their education after high school.
Finally, Queen Bey talked about her bestselling book Becoming and lauded the way she balanced her job as a partner, mother, and an author.
"I am so grateful that my daughters and my son live in a world where Michelle Obama shines as a beacon of hope who inspires all of us to do better and to be better," concluded the singer.
April 18, 2019: Michelle celebrated Beyonce's Homecoming by posting a video on X
Michelle celebrated the release of Queen Bey's 2019 documentary concert film Homecoming: A Film by Beyonce. It was a documentary about Bey's iconic headlining performance at the 2018 Coachella.
Her performance paid tribute to the HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) and featured a full marching band composed of HBCU alumni. The performance also had Black Feminism as one of the major themes and sampled works of famous black authors and thinkers.
In a video posted on X about the documentary concert film, Michelle Obama wrote:
"Girl you make me so proud and I love you. I also love that your new Netflix film Homecoming is informed by the black leaders, thinkers, and poets who have paved the way for folks like us," commented Queen Bey.
She further raved about the performance by calling it 'a celebration and a call to action.' The former FLOTUS credited Queen Bey for inspiring the next generation of greats through her art.
Apart from these, the two icons of this generation have often met at various events, award shows, and other public gatherings.
