Last night (September 15), Kanye West wrapped up a massive live set for a sold-out audience in Haikou, South China's Hainan Province, marking the start of the Mid-Autumn Festival holidays of the tropical island.
The show was announced late last month as part of his ongoing Vultures world tour, where Ye alongside Ty Dolla $ign and other featured artists take the collaborative album across major cities in North America, The United Kingdom, Europe and Asia.
Several magazines reported that the decision to allow Ye to perform in China was heavily discussed keeping in mind the artist's controversial history, which includes Kanye's antisemitic remarks from last year.
Social media users were quick to bring up Ye's previous public statements and relationship with Donald Trump as reasons why the artist should not have been permitted to perform in China.
Major highlights and moments from Kanye West's Sunday concert in Haikou
Kanye West's Haikou concert marks the rapper's return to China after 16 years, signifying Ye's return to the country where he spent his early childhood with his mother, Donda West, while she worked as a teacher in Nanjing.
According to China Daily, the show was attended by over 42,000 fans and was held at the Haikou Wuyuanhe Stadium. Yesterday's concert was announced in late August after a previously scheduled live set in Taiwan was canceled.
Reportedly, several Government officials cited how shows and live performances from artists like Kanye West are extremely "rare events," given that Ye's persona is starkly different from China's strict conservative rules and values.
Founder of Jingjian, Michael Zhou, explained during an interview with CNBC that West's Haikou concert was an event held in line with Hainan's efforts to focus on Chinese tourism and become an international travel destination. This seemingly includes claims made by people online which state that Taxi Drivers in the city were asked to play "only Ye's music".
Below are several standout and memorable moments from the concert, where Ye played a massive set list which included unreleased material from his discography.
