The prime suspect in the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur, Keefe D, is making bail. According to court documents obtained by Billboard, the accused has informed the Clark County District Court, Nevada that he can post his $750,000 bail.
On June 25, 2024, Keefe appeared in court to hear Judge Kierny's stipulations for his release. However, the judge refused to release the accused after hearing from music manager Wack 100. Wack 100 aka Cash Jones tried to post $112,500 of Keefe's bail and he used the assistance of a bondsman to pay the rest of the amount.
This led to the prosecutors suggesting that Wack 100 was acting as a middleman and paid the accused's bond only to appear in interviews of a potential TV series.
"It couldn’t go the other way"- Wack 100 gives a statement about Keefe D's innocence
61-year-old Keefe D was charged with Tupac's murder which took place over two decades ago. Tupac was only 25 years old when he was shot dead in 1996. While Keefe has pleaded not guilty, he has claimed that he orchestrated the shooting as mentioned in his 2019 book Compton Street Legend. In his memoir, the accused in Tupac's murder mentioned that he provided the gun used in the rapper's drive-by shooting.
Recently, the accused's court-appointed attorneys petitioned the court to be lenient, stating that their client doesn't pose a danger owing to his cancer diagnosis. A similar request was turned down in 2023 as prosecutors of the case argued that Keefe D was a high-ranking member of the South Side Compton Crips - the gang believed to be involved in Tupac's murder.
In the recent court date which took place on June 25, 2024, the defense failed to address the judge's concern regarding the source of Keefe D's bail money. Additionally, Judge Kierny mentioned that she would review Wack 100's documents and that she was aware he expected something in return for posting Keefe's bail.
Wack 100 accepted that he wanted an interview with Keefe D and that would happen only when the trial was complete. Wack believed Keefe was innocent. The music manager mentioned:
“It would have to be [after the trial]. It couldn’t go the other way, it couldn’t go the other way because if he’s guilty … he’s gonna be looked upon a certain way. If he’s innocent as I think he is and I know him to be understanding the case, then he’ll be looked at a total different way.”
In her statement refusing to release Keefe D from custody, Judge Kierny stated that she doesn't really see where the $112,500 for Keefe's bail came from.
Keefe D was arrested in September 2023 and was denied bail by Clark County District Judge Jerry Wiese when he was first taken into custody. Keefe has since pleaded not guilty to the murder and his trial is set to begin in November 2024.
