Lil Durk, the Grammy-winning rapper, was arrested in California last week, on October 24, over murder-for-hire charges, alongside five other members from his hip-hop group, OTF.
The rapper was arrested in connection to the August 2022 shooting, which according to NPR News, was an attempted revenge killing of his longstanding rival, Quando Rondo. While Rondo was luckily saved in the shootout, his cousin - Saviay'a Robinson - lost his life.
This is the second time Lil Durk is being held in custody. His music career started alongside his beginnings in the world of crime, as he joined the Black Disciples in 2009. The rapper is still a member of the Chicago gang, alongside Lil Reese, Chief Keef, and the late King Von and Fredo Santana.
Lil Durk joined Black Disciples after dropping out of high school
Lil Durk was born and raised in the Englewood neighborhood of South Chicago and was exposed to the street gangs of the region from an early age. When the 3-Headed Goat rapper was 17, he became a father, which led him to take his career more seriously.
He was going to Paul Robeson High School at that time but decided to drop out instead. Having dropped out, Lil Durk joined Black Disciples - a large street gang based in Chicago.
However, as soon as Durk joined the gang, he started getting into trouble with the police. In October 2011, the Pelle Coat rapper served time for possessing a firearm with a defaced serial number, for which he later pleaded guilty and was ultimately released.
Nine years later, he was involved in an altercation with Quando Rondo and his group, which resulted in the death of King Von - Durk's close friend and collaborator. In 2021, his older brother, DThang, also lost his life in a shooting incident.
Lil Durk was recently sued by FBG Duck's mother
On Wednesday, October 9, LaSheena Weekly - mother of the late rapper FBG Duck - filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Durk seeking compensatory damages for the death of her son at the August 2020 shooting.
Besides the No Auto Durk rapper, the lawsuit also alleges that his record label as well as the international recording companies distributing his music were also responsible for the murder of her son, Block Club Chicago reported.
The incident, which took place outside a Dolce & Gabanna store, also left two bystanders wounded. One of them was FBG Duck's girlfriend, Cashae Williams, and another man was named Davon Brinson. They're both listed as plaintiffs in LaSheena's lawsuit.
According to WBEZ Chicago, the list of defendants in the lawsuit includes Lil Durk, the estate of King Von, their high-profile record label, Dolce & Gabanna, two private security firms, the city of Chicago, and 6 members of the O Black faction - who were convicted in Duck's murder earlier this year.
According to the lawsuit, the No More Parties rapper and his label knew about King Von having "a vendetta against FBG Duck" and sought to build a brand of violence and reality rap based on committing real acts of violence consistently.
It also stated:
"They understood that reality rap, violence, controversy, beefs and notoriety were good for driving increased record sales, streams and views, for building a brand and profiting from a violent image."
Following Lil Durk's arrest, the Dinizulu Law Group released a statement, claiming it to be a sign that they were "one step closer to justice," reported Complex.
The Rich Off Pain rapper is currently being held in the Broward County Jail in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, without the accessibility to a bail bond. As Durk awaits his trial, no date has been set for it so far.
