Chance the Rapper recently shared an update on his upcoming new project, Star Line. During an interview with Complex that was published on June 26, 2024, the rapper confirmed that he was working on his new project and that it was almost done.

Initially, Chance shared that the project was almost 85 percent done, but he later said:

“That’s a little generous. I’ma say 83. 83.5, 82.7, you know what I’m saying? We’re living in the project right now. No one has the attention span for what the conversation needs to be, so I’m piecing it together and I’m living in it with my fans, with the new artists I come in contact with, and every moment so far has been huge.”

Star Line is inspired by Marcus Garvey's historic Black Star Line, a shipping line from the 1900s that was dedicated to connecting the historic Black Diaspora across the world, as well as Chance the Rapper's visit to Ghana in 2021.

This will be his second studio album since the release of his debut album, The Big Day, in July 2019.

Chance The Rapper elaborates on his new project and dropping Buried Alive

Chance The Rapper further elaborated on the creative process, stating how there is a certain pressure to ensure that the writing is careful and deliberate in its meaning:

"There is an immense amount of pressure when you’re a famous rapper. I represent a lot of people. I represent my family and I represent friends, and whatever I say on wax, especially in this digital age, it’ll be around forever."

He continued:

"And depending on how the internet reacts to it and presents it later, it can be regurgitated as a completely different thing than what I meant. I have to be careful with what I write, what I say, and definitely what I put out. But I love that right now, I’m so confident and so good that it really feels like a great opportunity every time I drop.”

The singer also spoke about releasing Buried Alive, the first single of the upcoming project, sharing that he was on tender hooks over how the single would be received by the fans:

“It felt really scary when I was getting ready to drop. What’s funny is that it got so much love. [People were like] ‘Damn, it’s good that this is what he’s on now…And that [song] is a two-year-old track. I made it at a time but wasn’t ready to release it, and something just came to me. I shot that video six months before it came out [too].”
