Ariana Grande met Pete Davidson for the first time in 2014, when Davidson made his debut on SNL and Ari was the musical guest. Two years later, the comedian made an appearance during Grande's monologue on the show but she was dating Mac Miller at the time. It was in May 2018 that Ari and Pete made their relationship Instagram official, shortly after the Positions singer broke up with Miller.
A month later, the couple announced their engagement on social media. However, soon after Miller's death from a drug overdose in September, Grande and Davidson broke off their engagement and decided to split.
In July 2019, Ariana Grande was on Vogue's cover, and opened up about his relationship with Davidson in the accompanying interview, saying:
"...And then I met Pete, and it was an amazing distraction. It was frivolous and fun and insane and highly unrealistic, and I loved him, and I didn’t know him."
The singer-songwriter also hinted at herself being bad at making real-life decisions, and commented:
"I’m like an infant when it comes to real life and this old soul, been-around-the-block-a-million-times artist. I still don’t trust myself with the life stuff.”
Pete Davidson didn't take the "distraction" comment well, bringing it up, and slamming the singer for it, on his 2020 Netflix special.
Ariana Grande also opened up about her grief after Mac Miller's death in the Vogue interview
In her interview with Vogue, Ariana Grande also opened up about dealing with the grief of Mac Miller's death, calling it "pretty all-confusing" before going on to say:
“By no means was what we had perfect, but, like, f***. He was the best person ever, and he didn’t deserve the demons he had."
The Side to Side singer also referenced herself being the one holding things together for her late ex-boyfriend, saying:
"I was the glue for such a long time, and I found myself becoming… less and less sticky. The pieces just started to float away.”
After Mac Miller passed away, Ariana Grande wrote him a lengthy, heartfelt note on Instagram, mentioning that she "adored" him. The post has been deleted since. She also honored him by getting the name of the dog they adopted together - Myron - tattooed on her left foot.
Pete Davidson called Ariana Grande out on her Vogue comments on a Netflix Special
After Ariana Grande's Vogue interview went viral, the comments she had made about her ex-fiancé also came to light. In a Netflix standup comedy special in February 2020, Pete Davidson brought the subject up on his gig, saying how he initially hadn't planned on "doing jokes" about his relationship with Grande after the breakup.
However, after a friend told him about being called a "distraction," he thought it was "fair game," further alluding to Ari's controversial "blackfishing" photoshoot by Vogue, saying:
“My career would be over tomorrow if I spray painted myself brown and hopped on the cover of Vogue magazine and just started sh*****g on my ex. Can you imagine?”
The comedian further added:
“Yeah, could you imagine if I did that s***? ...It would be insane.”
Davidson also addressed the massive ire he had received online from Grande's fanbase, and joked about it saying:
"My biggest fear is that i’m going to get shot in the back of the head by a 9 year old with a ponytail. And the last thing I’m going to hear is ‘hashtag cancelled’."
Pete's slam directed towards Ari was a direct consequence of her Vogue comments, which is further made obvious by how the comedian had remained tight-lipped about the split during an SNL weekend update in November 2018, saying:
"The last thing I will say is I know some of you are curious about the breakup, but the truth is it's nobody's business, and sometimes things just don't work out, and that's okay."
Davidson also called the Positions singer a "strong, wonderful person," confessing that he genuinely wished her "all the happiness in the world."
