Dangerously In Love was the inception of Beyonce's solo career as a pop sensation. The 2003 album was released when the Cowboy Carter artist took a hiatus from Destiny's Child, and the former blew up in no time. Besides giving us iconic songs like Naughty Girl and Bad Boy, Beyonce's debut solo album also revealed her love for astrology.
Signs is the eighth song of the album and talks about her life from the perspective of astrological signs. Beyonce describes every romantic interaction from the perspective of 'signs' and has a special anecdote for each of them.
Unfortunately, Capricorn is the only sign that doesn't get any special treatment in the entire song. Although Beyonce talks about Capricorn in the chorus and says 'I love y'all,' she never connects this sign with any incident or person in her life.
What does Beyonce say about each astrological sign in Signs?
In the five-minute runtime, Beyonce connects all the astrological signs with a person, or an anecdote, or a particular emotion in her life. Co-written by Missy Elliott, the song is entirely dedicated to the Zodiac signs by Queen Bey.
1. Sagittarius
Beyonce seems to always fall for a Sagittarius despite them breaking her heart. In the song, she sends a clear indication that a Saggitarius broke her heart once. She writes:
"In December every sign has it’s own mode/ I was in love with a Sagittarius/ See the emotions he put me through"
However, Queen Bey finally ended up marrying and having a family with a Sagittarius, i.e., Jay-Z. The song ends on a happy note as she keeps repeating 'I was in love with a Sagittarius' until the entire song fades out.
"I was in love with a Sagittarius, he blew my mind," she sings about the person she loves.
2. Virgo
Queen Bey herself is a Virgo and she thinks that a fellow Virgo would understand her needs and desires better than anyone. According to her, a Virgo would be able to understand her the best and she wishes to be with one. In the same line, the Grammy winner reveals that she has been hurt by a Pisces.
“Hey I wish he was a Virgo, the same sign as me and know how to show me love.”
3. Gemini
Gemini is connected to a lot of stereotypes in the astrological world and Queen Bey digs into those to slander someone.
“He also had a flip side, too much like a Gemini,” sings the Renaissance artist.
While she doesn't attach a negative connotation to the description and 'flip side' might mean several things, Beyonce clearly thinks that the person has 'too much' of it and she doesn't endorse that.
4. Pisces
A Pisces seems to have caused Queen Bey pain and she opens up about it while wishing to have a Virgo for a partner because they would share the same astrological sign.
Although we don't know who she is talking about, we know that she must've gotten hurt by them.
"...cause I’ve been hurt by a Pisces,” she sings.
5. Scorpio, Taurus, Libra, Cancer, Aquarius, Leo and Aries
Queen Bey dedicates one line to each of these astrological signs to describe a person she's encountered and picks one defining characteristic about them.
For instance, she singles out the Scorpio for being 'sexy'. The Signs singer desires only one thing in the entire song, i.e., to have someone who is as 'sexy' as a Scorpio.
“I want him sexy like a Scorpio,” she sings.
She also has good things to say about Taurus and describes the person as 'freaky.' In fact, Beyonce recalls how the Taurus 'handled' her once and raves about it in the song.
For the Libra, she uses the word 'fun' while Cancer is the 'sensitive' one. Queen Bey recalls how the Cancer holds her close to him. In fact, it is interesting to note that the co-writer of the song, Missy Elliott, is also a cancer.
“Got game like an Aquarius, switch moves after he been with you,” sings Beyonce about Aquarius.
Aries, on the other hand, gets the tag of 'flirtatious.' However, she never specifies whether she finds it a gift or a flaw.
Finally, she describes the Leo in her life as 'bossy.' The Dangerously In Love singer can't explain why she loves him but he is surely the 'life of the party' according to her.
Signs has been played almost eight million times on YouTube since the song was uploaded to her YouTube channel in 2017. On Spotify, it has been played over 15 million times.
