Chappell Roan, originally named Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, was born and raised in Willard, Missouri. Roan has revealed in several interviews that she grew up in a conservative Christian household, in a sense of rebellion against which the singer-songwriter got her first tattoo.
In an interview with Local10 in October 2023, Chappell revealed:
"I have a ‘princess’ tramp stamp. That was my first tattoo."
The tattoo is placed on Roan's lower back and has also influenced the title of her debut studio album, released in September 2023.
The title of Chappell Roan's debut studio album is inspired from her tattoo
Opening up about the story behind her "tramp stamp," Chappell Roan told Local10:
"It was kind of a ‘f*** you’ to my upbringing of very conservative, Christian, ‘modesty is hottest’ mentality. Ifeel like the pendulum has just swung so far because of how restricted I felt."
Despite the reason that motivated Roan to get the Princess tattoo, it has had a significant influence in her career as a singer-songwriter, inspiring the title of her debut studio album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.
Talking about it in her People interview from October 2023, Chappell Roan said:
"I have a tramp stamp that says princess and ‘Midwest princess,’ me being from the Midwest, it just made sense."
Unlike her debut EP released in 2017, Roan's debut album has received a much more positive critical acclaim. The album made way into the top 10 of the US Billboard 200 album chart soon after its release.
Elsewhere in her People interview, Roan mentioned the her album felt "like a party," elaborating:
"I think that people just want to be happy and reflect, sing, dance and dress up, and feel free.
"The project gives people an opportunity to express themselves without judgment and freedom to discover themselves in the same way that I feel like the project allows me to discover myself."
Chappell also revealed to the media outlet that the inspiration of her album's aesthetics came from drag shows, burlesque dancers and the 1995 camp classic Showgirl. In her words, the album is "just daydreams in drag."
The album contains nine singles, six of which have found a spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 - My Kink is Karma, Femininomenon, Red Wine Supernova, Pink Pony Club, Casual and Hot to Go!
Earlier in August 2024, Roan's album peaked on the Official U.K. Albums chart after spending 17 weeks on it, making the climb to the top.
Good Luck, Babe became the highest charting single of Chappell Roan's career
While The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess has brought Chappell Roan a significant amount of fame, the track that has become the highest-charting single of her career doesn't belong to it.
Released on April 5, 2024, Roan's single Good Luck, Babe earned the singer-songwriter her fastest 100 million Spotify streams and secured a position in the top 10 of several internal charts, including the US Billboard Hot 100.
In an April 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, Chappell described the song to be "about wishing good luck to someone who is denying fate.”
The Casual singer opened up about the songwriting process for the single, admitting that her intention was to "write a big anthemic pop song." She said:
"I knew exactly what I wanted. I wrote it in three minutes. I felt so much anger. I was so upset. It all came out, and I didn’t add anything when I wrote it all done. It was a perfect storm."
The song talks about a closeted woman trying to deny her romantic feelings, both for Chappell Roan as well as for women in general. The singer-songwriter opened her Coachella set with this track earlier this year.
