Snoop Dogg has been in the music industry since 1992. He started his hip-hop group 213 in 1991. It also included rappers Warren G. and Nate Dogg. They released their first and only studio album, The Hard Way, in 2004. They eventually disbanded in 2011 after the death of Nate Dogg.
In 1992, Snoop joined a hip-hop duo called Tha Dogg Pound. He joined hands with Kurupt and Daz to make songs for Doggystyle. The album was released under Death Row Records. Snoop's contribution to the album came after his previous collaboration with Dr. Dre on his debut solo album The Chronic in 1992.
Snoop has recorded many songs with a variety of artists since his initial years in the music industry. Notably, he still works with long-time friend and rapper, Dr. Dre. Snoop also announced this year that he will be working with Dr. Dre and Eminem on an album.
The origins of Snoop Dogg's music career
Snoop's entry into the music industry was with Dr. Dre. He was featured on Deep Cover and Dr. Dre's solo album, The Chronic in 1992. Although this was the time when Snoop officially started making music, he started rapping when he was in school.
In an interview with Playboy magazine in 1995 Snoop Dogg talked about rapping "since he was a boy." He said,
"First I would just say other raps and put my name in. Then I was getting to the point where I didn’t want to recite anyone else’s words. I wanted to do my own s**t."
Dr. Dre produced Snoop's debut album, Doggystyle. In his initial years in the industry, Snoop was arrested and faced legal charges of murder. Prompted by the difficulties, Snoop was ready to leave behind the gangster life. In HBO's documentary, The Defiant Ones, Dr. Dre revealed that he had met Snoop Dogg before they came together. He said,
"He was selling drugs and my stepbrother Warren G pops this tape in. I'm like that's Snoop? I'm like man, this is a f*****g diamond in the rough and we need to polish it up."
He was cleared of the charges and released his second album, The Doggfather in 1996. He has signed with many major record labels, like Death Row Records, No Limit, Geffen Records, and others.
In 2004, Snoop released Drop It Like It's Hot with Pharrell Williams. The song became the artist's first song to peak at Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Despite his contributions to the music industry, Snoop has not won a Grammy. He has voiced his experience at various times. In an Instagram post, Snoop revealed that he has been nominated 20 times for a Grammy, but has never won it.
While Snoop has continued to make music, he has also turned his attention to entrepreneurship. The singer has multiple businesses and investments, including a line of cannabis products. Recently, he launched ready-to-drink Gin and Juice with Dr. Dre. In an interview with Capital Xtra in July 2024, Snoop Dogg called Dr. Dre his long-time friend "brother" and "protector."
Although Snoop Dogg has actively produced music, The Dogg Pound remained relatively inactive. Although it was rumored that the group had disbanded, the trio reunited for their new track, Smoke Up. The song was released in May 2024 and marked their reunion after many years. More recently, Snoop announced that he has been working on an album with Dr. Dre and will release it this year.
