Coldplay was performing in Melbourne, Australia, over the weekend, when its vocalist and pianist, Chris Martin tumbled on stage. The frontman was singing Everglow at the Marvel Stadium as he came forward to address his audience, and as he attempted to walk backward, Martin fell through a trap door, making the audience gasp.

Chris Martin's fall was cushioned by a crew member, who stuck his hand out through a hole to catch the singer. After getting back on his feet, Martin said:

"That's not planned... Thank you for catching me, so much. Holy sh*t, that was nearly a YouTube moment."

Coldplay's Music of the Sphere tour is currently in its Australia leg. The tour kickstarted on March 18, 2022, and is set to conclude on September 8, 2025.

Coldplay's ongoing tour broke records as the most-attended tour ever

Regardless of Chris Martin's trap door fall, the band's show at Melbourne's Marvel Stadium became a huge success. The stadium highlighted Coldplay's success in an X post, mentioning that they've broken its all-time attendance record, with a total of 227k people attending their concerts across the four dates they performed on.

Coldplay's Music of the Sphere tour - which supports their 10th studio album, Moon Music - has sold over 9.6 million tickets across 164 tour dates.

With that, the tour became the most-attended world tour ever, and the second highest-grossing world tour, following Taylor Swift's Eras World Tour, Entertainment Weekly reported.

Earlier last month, on October 1, in an interview with NME, Chris Martin described their album as:

"‘Moon Music’ is kind of the story of waking up in the morning and feeling terrible about yourself, terrible about the world – depressed, isolated, separate, alone, and not able to be yourself... Through the album, it’s a journey to feeling the complete opposite at the end of the day."

Chris Martin isn't the first artist to experience a fall in Melbourne

Chris Martin isn't the only celebrity to have suffered a fall mid-performance in Melbourne. Last month, Olivia Rodrigo was in the city for her GUTS world tour, when she fell through a large hole on the stage as she ran across it.

The Vampire singer disappeared almost completely for a moment, causing a frenzy among the fans before she re-appeared, saying:

"Oh my God, that was fun. I'm OK... Sometimes there's just a hole in the stage - that's alright. OK, where was I?"

Although Rodrigo's performance was hosted at the Rod Laver Arena - a different venue from that of Chris Martin's fall - just like him, the License singer was unharmed.

When the Good For You singer was on Jimmy Fallon's show on October 30, she revealed that she had to go to the hospital following her fall in Melbourne, explaining:

"I went to the hospital after. Nothing happened, but they just wanted to make sure I didn’t have a concussion."

The 21-year-old also talked about the coincidence of the nurse at the hospital being named after her grandfather - who died a few months ago - which made her feel like he was there to check up on her. In the end, Rodrigo called it "a beautiful story."

Her GUTS world tour is still ongoing and will conclude on July 1, 2025.

Coldplay has 7 more shows left in 2024. The band will be performing in Sydney next on November 6, with the tour concluding for 2024 on November 16.

Next year, the band will kickstart the show in Abu Dhabi on January 9, and conclude it in London on September 8.
