Selena Gomez has become a global singer and has released numerous singles and studio albums. In 2012, Gomez released Slow Down, her second single from her debut album Stars Dance. Celebrities often collaborate with other artists, including musicians, and for her single, the then 21-year-old Gomez worked with The Cataracs.

Slow Down was Selena Gomez's follow-up to her hit single, Come And Get It. The Cataracs were an American hip-hop record production duo, consisting of David Benjamin Singer-Vine and Niles Hollowell-Dhar. Singer-Vine reportedly left the group in August 2012 and Hollowell-Dhar continued The Cataracs himself until 2014, after which he started releasing music under the alias KSHMR.

The Cataracs were born during David and Niles's time together at Berkeley. The duo decided to synergize their talents and went on to write and produce songs for a number of artists including Snoop Dogg, Selena Gomez, and Enrique Iglesias.

The two became the driving force for hit songs such as Like A G6 with Far East Movement and Booty Bounce with Dev. Like A G6 was a chart-topper and stayed at number 1 position on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 for three non-consecutive weeks.

The duo worked together until August 2012, when they announced that The Cataracs had taken "a new form." David made the decision to part ways and "put music down." Niles also informed their fans of the future and reported that he will continue to produce music. He ended the message on a positive note and wrote,

"In fact, instead of slowing down these last weeks, I've collaborated with artists I could only dream of before and created the best music of my career."

He added,

"And the music will only continue to get bigger and better."

In an interview with Complex Magazine in 2014, Singer-Vine opened up about the duo growing apart. He said,

“The Cataracs was really based on a friendship."

He added,

“We were just making music so naturally, he’s like my brother, and it was working, but 10 years go by and you grow up.”

After a decade of making music together, the two started to drift apart and were pulled in different directions. As for Niles, he continued to work under The Cataracs and produced Slow Down with Selena Gomez. Selena also performed the song on her Stars Dance tour in 2013. The upbeat song also infuses EDM elements in its instrumentation.

In a YouTube video, Selena Gomez talks about her tracks in her Stars Dance album. She said,

"Slow Down, I got to record with The Cataracs, it was so much fun."

She added,

"It is basically about having that moment—that one night that you don't want to end."

Niles now works in his own studio, where he does much of his music and production.

While The Cataracs drifted apart, their collaboration with Selena Gomez still is heard by many. While Singer-Vine decided to take time off music, Niles has continued to enhance his art and produce electro-house music. Many artists reportedly continue to use his samples including, SEVENTEEN and LOONA. Niles reportedly has also become popular in the Korean pop industry and continues to tour as a DJ around the world.
