With 32 Grammys to her name, Beyoncé is one of the most honored pop icons of this generation with millions of fans across the globe. However, some of her longtime fans aren't aware of the origins of her seemingly uncommon name.
Beyoncé's real name is Beyoncé Giselle Knowles. She was born in 1981 to Matthew Knowles and Celestine 'Tina' Knowles Lawson. As of this writing, the singer is 42 years old and will celebrate her 43rd birthday on September 4.
At present, the 42-year-old is married to rapper Jay-Z (aka Shawn Carter). She uses her husband's name along with her own and goes by the surname Knowles-Carter. In a September 2020 interview, the singer's mother, Tina Knowles, discussed the origins of the moniker Beyoncé and her family history with the name.
Tina Knowles revealed the origins of the name Beyoncé
In an interview with Heather Thompson in her podcast In My Head with Heather Thompson, Tina Knowles dissected the family history behind the moniker. The entrepreneur and fashion designer revealed that her maiden name is Beyoncé. However, the name was considered uncool at the time.
"A lot of people don't know that Beyoncé is my last name. It’s my maiden name," explained Tina Knowles. "My name was Celestine Beyoncé, which at that time was not a cool thing to have that weird name. I wanted my name to be Linda Smith because those were the cool names."
The 70-year-old further revealed that an error in the birth certificate spelled their name 'Beyoncé.' Tina Knowles and her brother Skip were the only two members of the family with this last name. She revealed that others were called 'Beyincé.'
"It's interesting — and it shows you the times — because we asked my mother when I was grown. I was like, 'Why is my brother’s name spelled B-E-Y-I-N-C-E? You know, it’s all these different spellings. And my mom's reply to me was like, 'That's what they put on your birth certificate," explained Tina Knowles.
Thereafter, she explained how discrimination against black people was responsible for the mistake going uncorrected.
"So I said, 'Well, why didn't you argue and make them correct it? And she said, 'I did one time. The first time, I was told be happy that you're getting a birth certificate because, at one time, Black people didn't get birth certificates," concluded Tina Knowles.
