Many fans were confused when they heard Katy Perry's fiance Orlando Bloom refer to her as Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson while calling her on stage during the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, late Wednesday, at the UBS Arena in New York.
The Firework singer, like many other icons in the industry, goes by a stage name that is different from her real name.
Katy's real name is Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson. The 39-year-old released her first album, Katy Hudson when she was just 16. After moving to Los Angeles, she changed her name to Katy Perry to avoid being confused with Kate Hudson. She took the surname Perry as it was originally the maiden name of her mother Mary Perry.
Orlando Bloom reminded the world of Katy Perry's real name during the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards
Perry's fiance Orlando Bloom was there to present the Video Vanguard Award to his wife at the MTV Video Music Awards on September 11, 2024. However, the Pirates of the Caribbean star referred to her as Kathryn Hudson instead of Katy Perry, confusing a lion's share of her huge fanbase.
Bloom went on to explain himself in a heartwarming way, expressing how he fell in love with the real Perry (i.e., Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson), away from the limelight and the superstardom.
“You fell in love with her as Katy Perry. I fell in love with her as Katheryn Hudson. You know her as a global superstar who brings love, light and her unique sense of humor to every song she writes and music video she creates. I know her as a mother, as a partner who brings that same love and joy to our family,” began Orlando Bloom.
The Gran Turismo actor spoke at length about her music and the joy she brings to her fans.
“In moments when we’ve most needed it, her music and the remarkable world she creates have brought a sense of joy and laughter, inspiring generations of people from all over the world. She loves with her whole heart, and it’s kind of irresistible. I see her reflected everywhere in our home, in her love for her work, but especially in her love for her fans."
Katy met Orlando Bloom a few years after her divorce from Russell Brand. In an episode of American Idol, the Firework singer explained a hilarious incident that brought the two closer.
"I met my boyfriend over In-N-Out. We were at the Golden Globes and we weren't together. So I had my security guard grab 10 In-N-Outs and all of a sudden I see my boyfriend's hand — he wasn't even sitting at our table — he just swoops in and he grabs it and I was like, 'Hey that's my burger!'" she recalled.
After an on-and-off dating phase, Bloom finally proposed to Perry in October 2019. In March 2020, the couple announced that they were expecting their first child together. Katy Perry finally gave birth to Daisy in August 2020.
Katy Perry once revealed how she almost changed her name after marrying Russell Brand
Katy Perry was married to Russell Brand before getting engaged to Orlando Bloom. In an appearance at The Ellen DeGeneres Show 2010, the Firework singer talked about how she was almost about to change her name to Katy Brand.
"[They call me Brand] sometimes when people try to get my attention. Like if I'm at an event or something like that and they want special attention. They go, ‘Mrs. Brand!’and I go shwoosh [looking back,]” quipped Katy.
However, her relationship with Brand plummeted within a year of their wedding, and they got divorced in November 2011.
The Firework singer also made VMA history, becoming the first singer to win the Vanguard award, having previously won Video of the Year and also presented the ceremony in previous years.
