Lauryn Hill is an advocate for artists belonging to the black diaspora. She has often used the stage to promote art by the black community. The To Zion singer appeared for a performance at the BET Awards on June 30, 2024. Lauryn wore a black dress with a yellow cape on top of it. She accessorized her look with sunglasses and shimmery head gear. Lauryn is known for her larger-than-life and unique fashion styles.

Lauryn was accompanied on stage by her son, YG Marley. The duo performed at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles. Lauryn and Marley performed on her hit tracks from the former's album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. They were also joined on stage by Wyclef Jean, a former group member of the Fugees. Lauryn's performance was also a tribute to her Ethiopian heritage.

The BET awards has been a long-standing platform to honor the contributions of Black artists in music, film, and culture. Lauryn made a rare appearance at the BET awards 2024. Laury and her son, Marley, began their performance with a soulful rendition of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, the title song of her 1998 album. She then transitioned to sing Lost Ones, another hit from her reggae-influenced record.

YG Marley who is continuing the music legacy of his grandfather, Bob Marley, performed his most recent single, Survival. The songwriting has been credited to Lauryn Hill and also incorportates reprised bits of Bob Marley's song, Ambush in the Night.

The night was not over as Lauryn's former group member, Wyclef Jean, from the Fugees, appeared on the stage. They sang their 1995 rap song Fu Gee La and closed the award ceremony.

Apart from a spectacular performance, the stage was set as a tribute to Ethiopian heritage. The background of their performance featured iconic images of the Axum Obelisk (historical landmark) and the Lalibela Churches (heritage museum). The backdrop also featured stunning pictures of Empress Menen Asfaw, revered figure known for her philanthropy and women's rights.

In May, Lauryn's The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was honored on the list of 100 best albums of all time by Apple Music. She was also invited to a special dinner. According to a statement to People, Lauryn said,

“This is my award, but it’s a rich, deep narrative, and involves so many people, and so much sacrifice, and so much time, and so much collective love.”

Lauryn is currently on tour with Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel to celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. The 21-city international tour began on August 9. More recently, it was announced that the US leg of the tour has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.


The BET awards marked a mini-reunion for Lauryn and her son, YG Marley. Fans cheered on as Lauryn performed on her hit tracks from her only studio album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. She paid a tribute to her Ethiopian heritage with a visual background. Other artists who performed on stage were Ice Spice, Tyla, Latto, Megan The Stallion, and many others.
