In the recent episode of A Safe Place Podcast featuring American rapper Lil Yachty, Mitch, and Cash Cobain on July 25, 2024, the rapper commented on his hometown Atlanta being the real trendsetter in fashion.
Talking about how New York is coping with Atlanta in terms of fashion, Lil Yachty told the podcast,
“I feel like New York didn’t have this — I don’t want to say identity — but everyone used to just kinda copy Atlanta.”
The rapper continued his statement addressing Cash Cobain, taking issue with the statement since he's from New York, and said that the influence in terms of fashion is "extremely heavy from Atlanta." Yachty also said that as far as style was concerned he doesn't "it's sh*t going on when it comes to New York fashion".
Juelz Santana and Fivio Foreign call out Lil Yachty over fashion remarks on New York
Lil Yachty spoke about New York and its fashion on the latest episode of A Safe Place Podcast wherein, after alleging that the Big Apple copies Atlanta's fashion, the rapper commented on people from New York wearing a lot of "homeboy's brands". The rapper questioned if people on the outskirts, specifically the Bronx and Queens, come to Manhattan to shop.
Addressing Yachty's comment on New York's fashion, rapper Juelz Santana published an Instagram post featuring a broken heart emoji, which read,
“WE all Love Atl But did @lilyachty SAY say the flyes [ninja emoji] N the Most TRENDSETTERS Came from ALT WOW Much love bro”
In the caption of his post, Juelz Santana mentioned that popular names in the fashion arena like Ev Bravado, A$AP Rocky, Fabolous, and Jim Jones belong to New York. Juelz also stated,
"it not one of the top it 1 On is 1 it NOT Best black High black Fashion Brands in the Game I’ma jus Stop Hear cuz N---- jus Say What they want nowadays 1 more thing must the n---- out there came from….NYC"
Apart from Juelz Santana, Big Drip rapper Fivio Foreign took to X to address Lil Yachty's comment on New York's fashion and tweeted,
"How yatchy say ATL dress better then ny w a whole NY fit"
The responses of Juelz and Fivio to Yachty resulted in the internet expressing its opinion on Yachty's comments wherein a lot of fashion enthusiasts from New York expressed their discontent at the rapper's statement.
On July 29, 2024, Lil Yachty took to TikTok to clarify his stance on the situation and said that when one goes back to a certain timeline in fashion, it is New York but if one considers recent times, "all the trends come from Atlanta."
Yachty also apologized for offending people in the Big Apple and the Bronx by stating,
“First off, I got nothing but love for New York. I think a lot of the flyest people in the world were born in New York. I apologize to the Bronx if they feel some kind of way about that comment. Amiri down, do your thing. I be in New York so don’t f*****g rob me. It was a joke.”
In his TikTok response to the controversy over his statement on New York's fashion, Yachty stated that he has been observing people from L.A. trying to get into the conversation and warned them by saying that they have nothing to do with it.
